LYMINGE ASSOCIATION
GARDEN SAFARI 2005
Another extremely successful Garden Safari with over
£900.00 raised in funds for the Lyminge Association
alone. Some 20 gardens were open over the two-day event
and 5 gardens in Etchinghill were warmly welcomed. The
variety and variations in style, setting and planting
was an inspiration to all. Well done and many thanks to
all the people who opened their gardens, without your
hard work and good will the event would not be such a
key event for the village events calendar.
The Parish Church joined the Lyminge Association this
year and celebrated a festival in flowers of wedding
anniversaries. This partnership added to the interest
and variety on offer whilst the Ethelburga Quilters
contributed with another excellent display of their
Quilting skills.
Finally congratulations to Pearl Funninger and her
excellent Scarecrow "A Lyminge Lovely" Although all the
entries were great fun and well thought out Cllr Susan
Carey who kindly judged the competition awarded Pearls
Scarecrow first prize. A special thank you must also go
to the Shops in Lyminge who made some fantastic
scarecrows and really made a valuable contribution to
the event. We look forward to the slide show of the
weekend at the Lyminge Association Annual General
Meeting (further details in September) and welcome you
all to join us and revisit the highlights.

Free Party, with Food and Drink
7.30 pm Wednesday 28th September 2005
Village Hall Club Room
Has that got your attention? Good.
Each year the Lyminge Association holds an Annual
General Meeting in which officials are elected to
various positions and new committee members are sought.
The Lyminge Association produces this Newsletter and
uses the profits from it to fund events and causes in
our villages. The Association also organises such events
as Santa's visits to children at Christmas, the
Charities' Trade Fair and, most recently, the Lyminge
Festival and Garden Safari.
Apart from being a functioning committee that takes
some of the decisions that affects our village life,
committee meetings are a good place to meet people and
contribute something to our village community. So if you
have considered giving two or three hours per month, do
come along and think about it a little more. We are
always looking for new people and new ideas.
After the main part of the meeting, which should take
less than an hour, there will be a slide show of gardens
displayed in the garden safari. I visited a number of
these gardens and was impressed by the way people opened
up their back gates and weeded so we could all steal
ideas for our own gardens -fantastic! Apparently the
pictures are quite good too.
So, everyone, come along to the Lyminge Association
AGM. Also, consider offering just a couple of hours of
your time if you can.
Another Editor Needed For
Newsletter
One of the positions needing to be
filled at the AGM is my own: Co-Editor of this
Newsletter. I have been editing the Newsletter for a
year and half and now think it time to give someone else
a chance.
My position requires some writing up of events and
notices, plus the odd phone call. Realistically you need
to be able to spend 5-10 hours per month, with the
majority of them between the 18th-24th of each month.
Skills needed: an ability to use Word on the computer.
The rewards: seeing your hard work appreciated,
especially if you have interviewed someone and they like
what you have said about them, and the feeling of
satisfaction that you are putting something back into
our community.
If you would like to learn more in a no-obligations
chat, call me, Graham, on 862907.
Lyminge Library News
By Jane Pace (The Librarian)
Thank you for making me feel so
welcome in your village. I'm enjoying it very much and
it's lovely to meet you all.
This month we start the children's reading voyage for
the summer holidays. Each child receives a captain's log
and stickers, as they read through the summer they
collect more stickers, compass, bookmark, certificate
and a medal. This is free. You just need to join with a
parent if you are not already a member. Land ahoy!
In September we would like to start a baby rhyme time
properly on a Thursday morning. For the more mature
reader we are staring a reader group in October time and
day to be confirmed. |
Cross the Bridge
By Katie Guy
Have you thought of upending your
daily routine by enrolling in one or more of the many
clubs and associations that are functioning in Lyminge?
I particularly recommend to you a game of bridge held
every Monday from 10-12 o'clock in the warm and very
comfortable Bowls Club home.
For the weekly bridge session we pay £1 to cover the
cost of hiring the hall and receiving a cup of coffee
and biscuits. Remember to wash up your own cup, and
that's the end of the chores!
We take our bridge quite seriously as it does
exercise the old grey matter, but we also have fun and
it is pleasurable to meet up with friends and
acquaintances who also look forward to Monday mornings.
Very rarely does Bridge Club not function. We are
extremely fortunate in having "Vi", Mrs V Sparling, as
our "guru" or lady in charge: there is very little about
bridge not known to her and, best of all, she welcomes
us warmly and individually and is willing to give advice
and help where needed.
So, whether you are highly skilled, knowing just
something of the game, or wanting to learn to play, do
please consider joining us.
Another Brownie Pack?
Angela Foxon (Barn Owl) 862073 I have
11 seven year olds who could start in September, but
only 2 places. During the next school year there will
only be 3 additional places. Looking further ahead to
September 2006 I will still have 22 from my current list
age seven plus and only 1 place.
I appreciate some of you may be concerned that your
daughter will be unable to have a place. We have a
waiting list because of the continuing popularity of
Brownies and a shortage of adults.
This is where you can help. I would like to open
another Brownie pack in either Lyminge or Elham. To do
this I need 3 people to become uniformed adult leaders,
2 adult helpers and a young leader age 14 - 15.
Volunteering for two hours a week would mean that the
list would be shorter and the girls could enjoy all that
Brownies offers sooner.
Would you be prepared to help me achieve this? We'll
make sure that you feel welcomed and valued, mentors
will be provided for the Leadership training, supported
by occasional group training sessions, and of course you
won't be left on your own.
With a little of your time or that of your friends,
we'll soon be able to offer more girls from our
community the chance to take part in the Brownie
Adventure - something they are so clearly asking for. |

behind houses in Canterbury Road, Lyminge, in1953. We are most
fortunate tha Dr Andrew Richardson, Kent County Council's Finds
Officer, has ageed to visit us agan on 6* September to Talk on
