News from the Parish Council

Parish Council Election
As reported last month, there are still two vacancies on the Parish Council and more than two people interested in filling them. Rather than choosing which of the candidates to co-opt, the Parish Council has asked Shepway District Council for a by-election: you’ll find details elsewhere in the newsletter. If you’re interested in standing and would like to know more about being a parish councillor, contact Derrick Hamer, Chairman on 863182, or James Butcher, the Vice Chairman (details below).

Parish Council meetings
The agenda for Parish Council meetings are published three working days in advance, and can be found on the notice-boards outside Lyminge Post Office, opposite what used to be the pub in Rhodes Minnis, and by the old village Hall in Etchinghill (although the Etchinghill board has been vandalised, so at the moment agendas can’t be displayed there). Anyone can attend meetings of the Parish Council and of the various sub-committees. The General Purposes Committee chaired by Patsy Philip (862983), usually meets on the second Monday of the month, at 7.30, at Lyminge Library. The Planning Committee, chaired by Pippa Hope (862115) meets when planning applications are received from Shepway District Council; the Parish Council only gets two weeks to respond, which doesn't allow for a regular cycle of meetings. The Finance Committee, chaired by Glen Floyd (862732), meets on the 3rd Monday of the month, at 7.30pm at Lyminge Library.

Meeting with young people of the parish
Along with members of the Village Hall Management Committee, a number of parish councillors met with a group of local young people to talk about facilities they would like to have available – in particular the feasibility and cost of creating a skate park to replace the homemade ramp that was recently moved off the car park.

Trees
The Parish Council asked the Tree Officer from Shepway District Council to inspect the trees along the Nailbourne; as requested he is recommending that they be covered by Tree Preservation Orders.
Our Tree Warden, Georgina Christian, has recently resigned: our thanks for her work over recent years. The job involves keeping an eye on the welfare of trees in the parish, and contacting owners of trees that need attention. If you would be interested in taking on this voluntary role, please contact the Clerk, Julie Bayley (862011).

Roads
Shepway District Council have recently carried out some road repairs in the parish. The Parish Council is continuing to press Shepway about other roads that urgently need attention.

Thank you
Thanks you to the unsung volunteers who help keep the parish tidy – particularly those kind people who empty litter bins.

Calling all trades
If you have a trade (e.g. fencing, building, grounds maintenance) and are interested in being asked to quote for Parish Council work, you can contact the Clerk, Julie Bayley, on 862802 , by writing to her at Eau Rouge, Rhodes Minnis, Canterbury, CT4 6XX, or by emailing her at jabayley@tiscali.co.uk

Next meeting
The next two meetings of the Parish Council are on 1 and 29 September, at 7.30 pm, at Lyminge Village Hall.

The Saint Nicholas’ Fair Challenge
to the Reverend Peter Ashman

“We, the esteemed and nimble fingered ladies of the St. Nicholas’ Fair Knitwear Team, hereby challenge the Reverend Peter Ashman to knit, by the evening of 13th December, a “Doctor Who” scarf of immense length. The scarf shall be knitted in chunky knit wool in garter stocking or rib stitch and should not be lengthened in any other way than by the addition of wool, neither should the Reverend use fat needles to make the stitches longer. It should be pleasing to the eye, with no evidence of showing off in the form of fancy stitchery. Any attempt to cheat will result in the scarf being unravelled and begun again. The scarf will be measured at the St Nicholas Fair. The Reverend may gather as much support as he can in the form of sponsorship, raised by the measured foot.”
Marjorie Joyce and Kate Smith

Thank you
I wish to thank my friends around the village for their kind support during Archie’s long illness and for the many letters of condolence I have received.
Kitty Sharp

CAN YOU HELP?
Shepway Volunteer Centre runs a voluntary car service for elderly, infirm or disabled local residents without private transport, to enable them to access medical appointments and undertake other essential journeys. The Centre is currently urgently in need of further volunteer drivers in the Lyminge/Etchinghill/Elham areas. Drivers use their own cars and are fully reimbursed for the cost of petrol. The Volunteer Centre co-ordinates the trips and offers all the support the volunteer needs. The time commitment is entirely up to the volunteer, even a couple of hours a month would be a great help. If you have a few hours to spare and a clean driving licence the Volunteer Centre would love to have you join their team. Please call 253339 for further info.

David Godden would like to thank everybody who gave donations to sponsor him when he took part in the run, and also those persons who came to see Michael Howard MP give him a “send off”. Almost 100 cars took part and raised almost £40,000 for the Downs Syndrome Assoc.

The 2003 Garden Safari

15 Gardens, The Ethelburga Quilters, A Methodist Church celebrating with flowers, A Garden Society Inter-club Table Competition and enough tea to fill a swimming pool!.
Nearly £1,300 was raised over the Garden Safari weekend, not only for the Lyminge Association funds but also substantial amounts from collection boxes, plant sales, cream teas and yet more tea and all for many deserving charities.
A huge thank you must be passed on to the interesting and contrasting array of gardens and their owners who all worked long and hard to ensure that their individual garden was viewed at their best.
We would also like to thank A.P. Willcox Printers for printing the programmes (and re printing on Saturday night due to demand) and also Steve Ivory our Community Police Officer for supplying the Police Slow signs (they certainly did the trick outside Lyndon Hall).
The Lyminge Association decided that it would be fitting to ensure that the money raised should be used to enhance the appearance of the village whilst also paying tribute/commemorating Doug Furminger and acknowledging his contribution to the village especially in his role as Lyminge Garden Society Chairman. As such we are currently considering placing 1 or 2 troughs similar to the one at the Broadstreet entrance to the village, according to the cost of the planters. It has been proposed that a memorial plaque be placed on one placed outside the Library and the other possible sited at the Sibton Park entrance to the village. This will of course be subject to authorisation from the appropriate authorities.
Finally thank –you once again to the Garden owners, who helped make the Garden Safari a great success. Just think all that is left to do now is water, dead head and enjoy your hard work and wonderful gardens (until the next time that is!!!).      Glenn Floyd - Lyminge Association
