NEWSLETTER

August 2002

Produced by
The Lyminge Association

JUBILEE COINS

We have been able to distribute Jubilee Coins to all the children of Lyminge School – but find we haven’t got quite enough for everyone else!  Have no fear, we have more on order and they should be with us soon.  Now that the Summer holidays are upon us we cannot guarantee to get them out during August, but you should certainly receive them in September.  Thank you for your patience – and in the meantime, thank you to Stephanie Rolph for her thank you note!

Lyminge Village Hall

We are pleased to say that the ladies’ toilet now has a new tile surround vanity unit and new hand dryer, leaving only repainting to do when a colour has been chosen.  Ian Bailey has also expertly retiled the gents’ and installed a replacement hand dryer.

A small sum has been budgeted for an external facelift and we have been contacted by Helen Burr and Catherine Hughes, who will kindly present a plan to the committee at the next meeting.  Peter Peacock has spoken with Tessa Bedwell, the new Rural Community Warden, who is keen to provide assistance for the work from young persons doing community service.

Plea – we are still looking for a secretary to take the minutes for the 1st Monday evening in the month and handle a small amount of correspondence.

Don’t forget to book your weekday afternoon birthday party for £10.00 when you bring your own paper cups and plates.
                                                                                                                Mike Foxon 862073.

Letter to the Editor

From:  Adrian Hackford

Re. Proposed re-ordering of Lyminge Parish Church: Update

“Following the response to my notice in the October 2001 Lyminge Newsletter concerning the proposed re-ordering of Lyminge Parish Church, I produced a report that represented a collation of reactions that I had received directly and indirectly from parishioners.  The report was submitted to the PCC in October 2001 and displayed for public perusal at Lyminge Library.

“During the Parish Church AGM in March 2002, it became clear that the Space Working Party (SWP), the group that has initiated and developed the proposals for the re-ordering of the church interior, questioned the validity of opposition to the proposals because the concerns had been expressed anonymously.  In order to substantiate the views held by many people, a significant number of church users (parishioners, congregation members, people with a connection with the church) signed the ‘Statement of Concern’ that was circulated during April 2002 and submitted to the PC in May 2002.

“The statement read: ”We the undersigned are concerned about the proposals to re-order Lyminge Parish Church.  We believe that the proposed re-ordering does not represent a solution to the central problems facing the Parish Church, namely the dwindling congregation and dwindling income.  This applies with the exception of alterations that would facilitate batter access to the church buildings for the elderly and disabled”.

“On 9th July 2002 I received a letter from the PCC to the effect that the views have been noted, and that they will be taken into consideration when the PCC makes a decision regarding the implementation of the proposals.  The letter also indicated that once the PCC has decided on the initial changes, they intended to conduct a consolation exercise for the congregation only (i.e. not the wider group of church-users), and subsequently inform the village as a whole of the decision.”

Friday 23 August
The Rude Mechanical Theatre Company’s
Theatre of the Green Tour 2002
The Comedy of Babi Babbett
All those who attended the Company’s previous production last year spoke very highly of the production – and are looking forward to this year’s!  Despite only a small cast, this multi-talented company has clearly demonstrated that they have honed travelling theatre to a fine art.
Traditional characters such as, Pantalone, Harlequin and Colombine will be recognised in this riotous new play, where the setting is 1793 Islington.  Babi Babett is the servant of Sydney Lean, a rich but deeply mean retired goldsmith – and the plot seems to have something to do with sausages (!).
Bring your own garden chairs and/or rugs and a picnic.  Tickets will cost £9.00 for adults, £8.00 for senior citizens and £5.00 for children, students and the un-waged.  There are group rates for families and groups of 10 or more.  Further information from 01323 501260

If you would like to join Ethelburga Quilters (which is for people of all ages and skills!), we meet on the third Saturday of the month from 10.00am – 4.00pm at Lyminge School.  Cost is £7.50 (children free – but under 12’s must be accompanied by an adult).  All you need is a sewing machine and a basic sewing kit to begin with – and a packed lunch.  Further information from Liz Coleman on 863197.

W. Aggis, formerly of Lyndon Hall
Adrian Westwood, of Hawksdene, The Street, Hastingleigh, TN25 5HU telephone: 01233 750563, would like to hear from anyone who has any details about the above gentleman. Mr. Westwood is research-ing a book on “Kent’s Secret Army” (British Resistance 1940-44), which was officially known as XII Corps Observation Unit or Auxiliary Units.  The organisation comprised local farmers, farm workers, shepherds etc. who knew the Kent countryside intimately.  In the event of a German invasion, their role was to disappear underground and cause as much damage as possible to the advancing German army.  Mr. Westwood is also keen to hear from anyone who has photographs of local Kent Home Guard units, ideally complete with the names of the members.

Lyminge W.I
At the July meeting of the Lyminge W.I., a very good garden party was enjoyed by many members and guests.  The weather was kind, the food, as usual was excellent, and the entertainment value good.
The August meeting will have a change of plan; instead of a craft evening, we will have a humorous quiz night.  Why not come along and have an entertaining evening?  We welcome visitors, and if you are a “fallen by the wayside” member, please do come and enjoy a few “taster” evenings at no expense.  I am sure you will enjoy pleasant and interesting company.
For further details, please contact Lyn Callander on 862799 (usually an answer phone, but I promise to always get back!)

LYMINGE GARDENERS’ SOCIETY
Saturday 17 August
It’s show time for the Society during August.  The Annual Summer Show is at the Methodist Church Hall.  The Staging of exhibits takes place between 8.00am and 10.30am and the hall will be open from 2.00pm to 4.30pm for visitors.  If you have flowers, vegetables, pot plants etc. which you are proud of – do enter them in the show – there is a good chance of you wining a (small) monetary prize and a certificate.  The children’s competition consists of three classes; a gingerbread man, a potted plant, and a face mask made from a paper plate – and nobody has to be a club member to enter!  Schedules available from the Library.  If you do not enter anything, then come along in the afternoon to view the entries, have a cup of tea and some cake and enjoy good company.

Tuesday 27 August
On Tuesday 27 August there will be a table competition with the Newington and District Gardener’s Association.  It starts at 7.30pm at the Methodist Hall, Lyminge,  Newington have won the two previous competitions (only just), so perhaps it will be Lyminge’s turn this year.  Non-members are most welcome to come along for the evening.  Refreshments will be served and  there will be a fun quiz whilst the judging takes place.

The Inter-Club Competition
At the Inter-Club competition held at Hythe on Saturday 29 June, the Lyminge Gardeners’ Society came a very creditable fourth.  It was an enjoyable day and the money won helped swell club funds.  Marjorie Joyce won 1st and 2nd prizes for her roses – congratulations to her!

Garden Tips
August is a month when it’s time to sit back and enjoy the garden, apart from grass cutting and hedge trimming (it’s the best month for tackling Leylandii hedges).  Just let the plants do their won thing; a little gentle dead heading in the cool of the evening is all that’s needed.  Save all your energies for the autumn cutting-back and clearing.

Sabre Conservatories, Windows and Doors
We manufacture beautiful double-glazed PVC-u units in our own factory to exacting standards.  We can also boast of being only one of five companies in the UK manufacturing the fantastic slim-line Marshall Tufflex system Vertical Sliding Sash Window, which caries a severe weather rating.  So, if you have old box sash style windows and believe PVC-u would look out of place, think again!  Maintenance free, sealed units, spring loaded balances, slim-line appearance and decorative 'horns' make our Vertical Slider one of the best on the market.  Remember, we are suppliers to the trade both in the UK and Europe - they know a good window when they see one!
