WARNING
There seem to be a number of opportunist burglars around in the Shepway
area. If someone comes to your door asking for access (e.g. they are from
the Water Board, or they’ve come to read the meter), please make sure you
see their identification cards. If you are at all worried about them, close
the door and then ring whoever they say they are from and check them out. If
they are genuine people, they won’t mind a bit. If you still have
concerns, make sure you let the Police know and also your Neighbourhood
Watch Coordinator. Please also check that your shed is locked and alarmed
and make sure all the children’s bikes (etc.) are put away in the evening.
Lyminge
Association News
A REMINDER! There will be a Clubs and
Societies Evening on Friday 14 September 2001 at Lyminge School. About 20
clubs or societies will be present and if your organisation has not
registered a wish to attend – get on to Mike Foxon on 862073. It will be
an ideal opportunity for local organisations to promote themselves and also
a good opportunity to recruit additional members or volunteer helpers. For
those who are new to the village, or those who are thinking of a new hobby,
it will be your chance to see what is on offer, without commitment. Lyminge
School Parents and Friends will provide refreshments during the evening.
During the evening the Lyminge Association will hold a short Annual General
Meeting, to which everyone will be most welcome.
Lyminge Parish
Council
The next meeting of the Parish Council is
on 3rd September at Lyminge Village Hall, starting at 7.30 pm.
Flooding
Patsy Philip has been representing the Parish Council at the Lesser Stour
and Nailbourne River Management Group. You’ll find a full report from the
Group attached to this newsletter, and
reproduced here. The Parish Council has distributed questionnaires from
the Environment Agency to houses they believe were effected by the Autumn
and February floods. If you didn’t get a questionnaire, and feel you
should have done, please contact Colin Auld, the Parish Clerk, on 862607.
Crime
The Parish Policing newsletter from Kent County Constabulary reports that
recorded crime fell by 20% in Lyminge over the last year. 18 offences were
recorded in Lyminge and Etchinghill between 1 January and 31 March 2001.
Back in February, the possibility of introducing CCTV cameras was discussed
at a public meeting in Elham. The Parish Council has been investigating
possible sources of funding, should there be public support for such a
measure.
Play equipment
The Parish Council has received reports about misuse of the equipment in the
play area next to the Coach and Horses. The equipment is designed for
children under 12 and if too many children use the equipment at one time,
there’s a risk that a child may get hurt.
Bus timetables
Bus timetables have been unavailable for some time. The Parish Council
contacted Stagecoach, who say they will be producing new information by 1
August. They also report that they intend to withdraw Service 17 (which runs
up the Elham Valley to Canterbury) after 7.00 pm from 30th July. According
to Stagecoach, Kent County Council are considering whether or not to support
the service financially, in order to keep it from closing.
Editor’s note: The
following was received from Janet-in-the-Library: “….I was unable to get
a copy of the new timetable. I think most remain the same, but the last bus
will run at 7.00pm – none after that. The timetable will be available from
the 30th”.

Road, Lyminge. Telephone (01303) 863581.

reply: my email had a fault, which has now been fixed.)
West Wood Lyminge Update
A message from FOREST ENTERPRISE
ENGLAND (telephone: 01580 211044):
The planning permission for the Rank
Organisation’s leisure complex at West Wood lapsed in April of this year.
No application for renewal has been made and therefore Rank’s interests in
the wood have now ceased. Forest Enterprise would now like to begin the
process of getting the wood back into management and into a condition that
will benefit the public, woodland conservation and us. The works that we
would like to undertake include:
• Removal of ropes and platforms from the tree canopy
• Clean-up of all dumped rubbish, card and other detritus in the wood
• Making safe the various tunnels dug in the forest floor
• Ride and roadside vegetation management to increase floral diversity
• Resume woodland management
• Restoration and improvement of the car park area and paths
• Management of ancient monuments
• Tidying and rationalisation of entrances
The list is obviously not exhaustive, but even this is going to take a lot
of time, effort and expense to complete. Unfortunately, none of this will
happen until we have vacant possession of the wood and as no development
will be taking place we would expect the protesters to now depart and leave
the wood in a condition they would hope to find it. I cannot, at the moment,
give an exact date when we would like to begin the work, but would hope to
start before the end of the summer to make use of the drier conditions in
the wood.
T. Jennings, District Forester, FM & Finance.
As the Editor I was
very sad to receive the following announcement. I had always thought what an
interesting and varied programme the group enjoyed and when I went to a
meeting to give a talk I was made extremely welcome. Mr. and Mrs. Bain, will
I am sure, have been given hearty thanks by the remaining members, but I
should like to add those of the Lyminge Association – and best wishes for
the future:
Lyminge Senior
Citizens’ Club
It is with great regret that as from July
25th, the Senior Citizens’ Club will be closing. We have been unable to
fill the posts of Chair, Secretary and Treasurer after trying for many
months, The Club has been very successful for many years, enjoying a choir
of their own and a membership of over 70. We now have 25 at times. Our
Chairlady feels that through health problems she can no longer carry on.
We had a very enjoyable outing to Deal,
where a number of friends joined us. For our closing outing we have arranged
a coach drive and tea at Lathe Barn. Dorothy Bain.
Lyminge School
Work on the new Early Years Unit (with
staff-room over) will start during the Summer Holidays. Messrs. Charlier of
Hythe are undertaking the building work. Please remind all children that
buildings sites are dangerous and they must not go anywhere near it. All
parents of school children will have received more information, particularly
about accessing the school while the work is being undertaken (i.e. via the
side gate on Tayne Field). Most of the money has now been raised – but
there is still another £14,000 or so to raise, so we cannot rest on
our laurels! The new Computer suite should be completed during the Autumn
Term.
These new facilities make sure that our school is full equipped and fit for
the 21st Century! If you are new to the area and want to have a look at the
school, the new Head teacher, Mrs. Michèle Rowland will be delighted to
show you round. Our school was praised in the recent OFSTED report for its
friendly and welcoming environment and high levels of achievement. A new
introductory pamphlet and a prospectus will be available during the Autumn
term –telephone 862367 for further information (after 23 August).
The Parents and Friends
of Lyminge School
Thank you to all those who contributed to
the success of the School Summer Fete – we raised over £900.00. Special
thanks to the “Village Veils” for some inspiring sponsored belly dancing
and to the Air Cadet Band and Meridian for creating such a wonderful
atmosphere.
Continuing our fund-raising, our next
event is the Lyminge Fun Run. There is a sponsor form
and more details attached to this Newsletter and
reproduced here. You don’t have to run - just come and join the fun!
On Saturday 29 September we are
holding another Harvest of Talents Show in Lyminge Village Hall. A
show for all ages and abilities. A chance for us to celebrate our village
talent. So if you are a member of a band or play an instrument, sing or you
are a comedian, or thespian (!) – and you’re willing to give up an
evening for the school building fund, please contact Claire Frost on 863717
– the programme is being drawn up soon!
We are drawing the Lyminge School
Grand Draw at this event. Tickets are 40p each – and there are some
amazing prizes (see next month’s Newsletter). Tickets are available from
the school and Haxtons the Estate Agents and will be sold at the Fun Run and
the Harvest of Talents Show.
We hope you will support these
events and enjoy them with us!
NEXT MONTH’S
COPY DATE
Owing to an imminent computer up-grade,

copy date for the SEPTEMBER issue will be 15 August 2001. Thank you for your
kind co-operation

Reports
Etchinghill W.I.
We had a most interesting talk by Graeme Quinton Jones on the
“Birth of an Orchestra” (The City of Canterbury Symphony Orchestra. As
we don’t have an official meeting in August we have planned; a Garden
party, a day trip to Penshurst and an afternoon visit to Tenterden. The
competition winner was Yvette Grandfield with her water colour of Dungeness.
The meeting closed with our usual delicious tea.
Sibton Park Cricket Club
100 Club Winners for July were:
Mrs. V. Law - £25, C. Francis - £10, J. Flanagan - £5.
Pétanque
The Elham Valley Twinning Association represented Shepway in a match
versus Boulogne on a day of mixed sports held in Boulogne on Mid-Summer’s
Day. The team was Cllr. David Monk (Lyminge), Colin Turnbull (Elham), Yvonne
Parry (Elham – Captain). The Score was Boulogne 3 – Shepway 0. You will
be happy to know the games had a closer finish than the final scores seem to
show, which is a good indication that with more experience, Shepway can win.
We did much better in the double games, which this year, were not part of
the match. A VERY good day’s sport (five hours play, plus one hour lunch),
thoroughly enjoyed by all!
Migration 2001 – the Results
Our second annual amphibian migration is over. This year the effort to
conserve the Beachborough toad colony began on 7 February and ended on 30
April.
As last year, the project can be considered an overall success as, in
particular, more amphibians were assisted across the road and fewer met
their demise on the road. For the second year running the project succeeded
because of the committed support from the volunteers. Our contingent of
local volunteers from Etchinghill, New Barn Corner, Postling, Lyminge and
Elham were joined, this year, by three volunteers from Folkestone and two
from Hythe.
The results were as follows:

Garden Hints for August
It becomes more difficult to give monthly hints in what has been a
very strange growing season, when a good many growing things are not doing
as they should!
Irises can be moved or divided and carnations layered. Take stem cuttings of
perennials whilst the plants are growing vigorously. Dead-head and collect
any seeds you will need for next year. Pot up or plant out strawberry
runners. Cut hedges before growth slows down. Try sowing some late salad
crop and get that home-grown taste into the autumn.

Sabre Conservatories, Windows and Doors
We manufacture beautiful double-glazed PVC-u units in our
own factory to exacting standards. We can also boast of being only
one of five companies in the UK manufacturing the fantastic
slim-line Marshall Tufflex system Vertical Sliding Sash Window,
which caries a severe weather rating. So, if you have old box sash
style windows and believe PVC-u would look out of place, think
again! Maintenance free, sealed units, spring loaded balances,
slim-line appearance and decorative 'horns' make our Vertical Slider
one of the best on the market. Remember, we are suppliers to the
trade both in the UK and Europe - they know a good window when they
see one!
