THE LYMINGE
NEWSLETTER

April 2005

Produced by
The Lyminge Association

Copy deadline for next month's edition is Saturday the 16th April.
  • ADVERTISING: Call Jean Howard on 862488 or email in word.doc format jean.howard1@btinternet.com  Money must be received before Advert can appear in this newsletter.
  • ARTICLES & LETTERS Call Graham Caldow on 862907 or email in word.doc format gcaldow@hotmail.com

The Lyminge Association would like to apologise to everyone for the late delivery of the Newsletters last month; we prefer late delivery than our hard working delivers slip on the snow and ice.

The weather also caused the cancellation of the Charities’ Trade Fair – again the organisers put safety first. However they have decided to re-schedule this event, so keep your eyes peeled for the new date.

Last month I missed out a zero in my article on Our Very Own Marathon Man, Chris Feist. Sports wheelchairs can cost as much as £3000, not £300 – which would be a bargain! Anyway, it is not too late to sponsor Chris for his efforts, so please, if it’s only penny a mile, pledge something.

I must have had several ‘senior’ moments last month as many of you pointed out mistakes.  I apologise for this and hope this month’s will be correct If nothing else, it proves that you are reading everything!

Tescos are once again giving away ‘Computers for Schools’ tokens.  These can be collected and placed in the box in the library where they will be given to the local Primary school.

LYMINGE JUDO CLUB
Lyminge Village Hall,
Monday evenings from 6.15pm
Judo - A Gentle Art
Lyminge is a small club licensed by the British Judo Association, which was first formed in 1982. At Lyminge judo we like to keep the atmosphere friendly, welcoming and informative. We meet on a Monday evening where the training is split into 3 sessions to cater for all ages and abilities. The 1st group runs from 6.15 until 7.00 and is for 8 to approx 11year olds, the 2nd group runs from 7.00 until 8.00 and is for 11 to approx 16 year olds depending on ability. The last group is for adults and runs from 8.00 until 9.00. Judo gives everyone a very good grounding in self-control and discipline alongside being able to defend themselves in a safe way. Through the club it is possible to take part in gradings in which the player’s ability is tested on theory and practice, gaining a different coloured belt for different grades attained. They are always reminded when and where judo should be practised, safety is paramount. Parents are able enjoy a tea or coffee while watching their children train.

Tuesday 3rd May
TALK on THE HISTORY OF DOVER HARBOUR

Members will remember the fascinating talk in 2001 by Mark Frost on Dover Bronze Age Boat. We are delighted to welcome him again to Talk on the History of Dover Harbour. It never ceases to amaze us how little we citizens of Shepway know about our sister town and harbour, just under seven miles along the coast. So this spring we aim to rectify this by inviting a Dover expert following the visit to his museum. The talk will be given at the Lyminge Methodist church hall which will be open from about 7.05pm.members and visitors should arrive between 7.15and 7.45pm when proceedings will commence.

Non-members and visitors are always welcome to attend our meetings at £2 per person. As usual, tea and coffee will be available after the meeting when time is available to talk to the speaker and for discussion. Any queries to Mary Button on 862371 or Bob Gay on 862574.

ETCHINGHILL “UPDATE”

Lovely to see so many signs of Spring after our “surprise” Winter..

The Etchinghill Residents Association will, by the time you read this, have held our Easter “Eggstravaganza”.. and would thank you for your support.
During the year, we are planning involvement in the local Boot Fairs and perhaps, a “Best of British” event in the Summer – “watch this space!”.
Other matters being addressed are a Village sign, Beautiful Village funding.. and some issues with Shepway District Council.
Finally, we have received information that your Rural Community Warden, Ian Norman, has relinquished this post to Paul James. Paul can be contacted on 07977 981994 or e-mail capelwarden@hotmail.com. We would like to take this opportunity of welcoming Paul, but also recording our real and sincere thanks to Ian, a real character!, and for his work on our behalf.

Lyminge Baby and Toddler Group

Are you a new parent or have you recently moved to the area! If you want to meet other parents/carers who have young babies and children in the village or surrounding area then come along to one of our meetings.

We meet every Tuesday morning 9.30 – 11.30 during term time at the Methodist Church Hall (opposite Lyminge Primary School).

Our group provides a chance for adults to have a chat and coffee with other parents and for the children we provide a stimulating environment where the youngsters can play, have fun and socialise with others.

The first session is free and then afterwards we charge a small fee of £1.50 per family each week you come. All funds are used for the group’s activities. i.e. hire of hall, refreshments, new toys, craft materials etc.

If you want to come and join us then either just turn up on a Tuesday or tel. Abi on 01303 862840 or Yvonne on 01303 862765 for further details.

ETCHINGHILL W.I.

The well-attended meeting in March was a very interesting, informative and at times, amusing afternoon. We had one of our favourite speakers, Mr Bob Ogley (his fourth visit) and his subject this time was ‘Kent in the 19th Century’. He is very knowledgeable about the County;so much research has been put into all his subjects. It is amazing how many personalities of renown such as Royals, Artists and Authors resided in the County. At the end of his talk he was asked to judge the competition which he found quite difficult, as there was a record entry of ‘Old books of Kent’. The winner was Mary Hickmott.
Bob’s latest book ‘Kent in the 19th Century’ was on sale at the end of the meeting. These signed copies were very popular. Bob and his wife then joined us for our usual sumptuous tea..

The first of our many planned treats will be a cream tea at the Grand Hotel later this month.

At our next meeting on 19th April the speaker will be Mr I Currie whose subject is’Frost – Fairs and Freezes’ and the competition is for ‘A Fairground Prize’
