THE LYMINGE
NEWSLETTER

April 2003

Produced by
The Lyminge Association

Message from the Chairman of the Lyminge Association

May I take this opportunity to thank Liz Coleman for the time and effort that she has put into the Newsletter over the past 13 years.  I am sure that the Association and the Parish of Lyminge who receive the Newsletter will join me in this vote of thanks.  I am pleased to welcome Sarah Huntley as the new editor and Jean Howard as administrator as from this edition.  We must all remember that this is YOUR newsletter and its continuity requires the Parish’s support in many ways, including the supply of articles, advertising, and help in the distribution within the Parish.  So, to finish, please help us to keep you informed by supporting our team’s effort.
Jeff Turnbull

Hello from new editor!

I am pleased to be taking on this new role as editor of the Lyminge Newsletter and am looking forward to tackling the task! I would like to thank Liz Coleman for all her good work and also for her assistance in training me and Jean for our new jobs! As you will see, this newsletter is very similar to the usual format, there are no drastic changes. However, there will always be new ideas which are worth considering and I am really interested to hear any suggestions that you may have.  For example, would you like more articles, letters, local features etc. etc. ? I can be contacted by telephone on 862775, or emailed at sarah_huntley@hotmail.com.  Alternatively, you can put any suggestions or ideas into the boxes in the library or the newsagents.  Please let me know, so that the newsletter can be the best that it can be!  In the mean time, please bear with us as we are still learning, apologies for any errors in this first newsletter!
Sarah Huntley

Appeal for help

The newsletter is distributed to every house in the Parish by a team of volunteers.  The Lyminge Association would like to take this opportunity to thank them for all their continuing hard work. However, we need some more help!

  • Mrs Hills, the distributor for Station Road, Lyminge, is unfortunately moving away.  We therefore need a new distributor for this area of approximately 80 houses.
  • 2 or 3 extra people are required to help with distribution in the Rhodes Minnis area.

If you can help with either of these, please contact Debbie Marsh on 863192.

During April in the Library
The first draft of planned alterations to the Village Hall will be on show.  The process is very much at the planning stage and comments and ideas from all who use the hall will be appreciated and carefully considered.  A sub committee will be formed to oversee the project and volunteers to serve on this committee are being sought.

YORK AND ITS MINSTER
Living so close to Canterbury we tend to overlook that there is another Archbishop in England, the Archbishop of York, the Primate of England (but not All England!) and that York Minster is longer and taller than Canterbury, and one of the largest churches in Europe, also sitting in a city of great historic interest.  Bob Gay DipArch(Dist), FRIBA will be presenting his talk on this equally beautiful Cathedral and its fascinating city at 7.45pm on 6th May at the Lyminge Methodist Church Hall.  Visitors are welcome to attend at £2.00 per person.  Tea and coffee will be available after the meeting.  Any questions to 862574.

For more information phone Liz on 863197. The workshop will take place at Lyminge School from 10am to 4pm. Tea and coffee will be provided, but please bring a packed lunch.

Lyminge WI
For the March WI meeting we had invited Patty Baxter (founder of the Charity Hope Romania) to give a follow up to her short visit to our November meeting. We were well rewarded and Patty gave a very interesting talk, leading us through the pleasures and pitfalls of setting up homes in Romania. A little vignette of each of the early members with “before” and “after” anecdotes and photographs made us all realise just how lucky we and our families are. We were surprised to learn that Patty has an invalid husband and her trips to Romania she counts as her respite – it only goes to demonstrate the old adage “if you want a job done, ask a busy person”. A number of our members have decided to support this Charity and no doubt you will be reading more about it.

Etchinghill WI
At our March meeting we had as our speaker the talented artist Mr Tony Blain. It was an amusing and educational afternoon. He demonstrated a watercolour painting of the artist Monet which, to the inexperienced eye, was as good as the original. The competition for a small favourite picture was won by June Price. Plans are in hand for a visit to Chartwell on 2nd September. As usual, we finished the afternoon with an enjoyable tea.

Methodist Women’s Fellowship
An invitation is extended to anyone interested, particularly young people, to a Puppet Presentation being given by members of Cheriton Baptist Church. This will take place at 2.30pm on Monday 14th April in the Methodist Church Hall. There will be a retiring collection.
We meet every Monday from 2.30-3.30pm and a warm welcome awaits you, fellowship and a cup of tea, with a collection for various charities.

RUBBISH!
Are you fed up with the amount of litter that you see around Lyminge?
If so, you are not alone and you may be interested in joining a village litter-picking group. If you can spare a small amount of time for a few weekends a year then please contact Steve Huntley on 862775. All equipment will be provided.

The Playgroup is a member of the Pre-school Learning Alliance and meets standards set by KCC and OFSTED. The most recent, excellent OFSTED report stated, “…In this thriving Playgroup the children are making good progress towards the Early Learning Goals. There is a strong partnership with parents and carers which contributed positively to the children’s good progress.”

Ayckbourn comes to Lyminge
Some tickets are still available at Haxtons Estate Agents in Lyminge for Lyminge Dramatic Society’s production of Alan Ayckbourn’s hilarious play “A Chorus of Disapproval.” The play runs from Wednesday 2nd to Saturday 5th April at Lyminge Village Hall and Senior Citizens are invited free of charge to the dress rehearsal on Tuesday 1st April. All performances will commence at 7.45pm. The play centres on a lonely widower who joins a local operatic society and it promises to be a memorable production.
Lyminge audiences are now experiencing much improved comfort and viewing facilities at the Society’s performances as a result of staging which is used to create raised seating for the rear 6 rows in the hall. The purchase has been possible by virtue of a generous grant from the Community Fund, South East Office.

Royal British Legion
The Elham Valley branch of the Royal British Legion is in urgent need of a new Poppy Collection Co-ordinator who should, if possible, be based in Elham or Lyminge. We have a large number of collectors all over the area, but our Co-ordinator has had to give up.
The Branch also needs someone to give secretarial back-up to the Secretary by taking minutes at the five Branch meetings per year and typing them up for circulation etc.
If you would like to help this important charity please ring Gerald Hogben on 01227 709527 or George Ramsey on 01303 840229. Being a member of the British Legion is not necessary. Please help if you can. It is most important to keep the Branch going in order to help those who are now in need of assistance.

Lyminge Gardeners’ Society
The April meeting, on Tuesday 22nd, will be an evening visit to the Orchard Nurseries, Stone Street.  There will be an introductory talk by Mrs Bushell, the current owner and daughter of the founder of the nursery, which has been operating for 40 years.  Members will then be free to browse and buy.  Refreshments will be available.  Meet at the library car park at 6.15pm or the nurseries at 6.30pm.  Non members welcome.
The spring show will be held on Saturday April 5th in the Methodist Hall.  Staging of exhibits from 8.00 – 10.30am.   Help will be on hand for those exhibiting for the first time.  The hall will be open to members of the public from 2 – 4pm and refreshments will be available.  Do call in and enjoy a colourful and fragrant display.
An apology – the children’s competition was wrongly given in the March bulletin.  It should have read:
1. A decorated egg
2. A four line poem, entitled “Spring”
3. Five currant cakes
However, if any children have prepared the items given in the March newsletter, they will be accepted for the show.

Garden Tips
After many years of sowing seeds, pricking out and potting on, I have decided that life is too short.  Where only a small number of plants is needed, time and money can be saved by buying plugs and small ready grown plants to grow on in a greenhouse or on a windowsill.  That way, the nurseryman takes all the risks of clumping off, failure to germinate, etc.  Where large quantities of any one variety are needed, sowing seeds will still be cost effective.  Whatever choice you make, don’t be tempted by a spell of warm weather to plant out non-hardy plants before the very end of the month and most will be better left until May.

Garden Safari
This year the Lyminge Garden Safari will be on the 21st and 22nd June. The event will be dedicated to Doug Furminger. Various attractive gardens around Lyminge will be opening their gates. Passports, which are required to gain entry to the gardens, will be available from the end of May.
However, we need more volunteers! Do you have a garden that you would like to open for the event. You can open your garden for just one day, or for both. In addition, each gardener can hold a collection for a charity of their choice if they wish.
Please join in and help make this event as successful and enjoyable as it has been before. If you can help, please phone Jeff Turnbull on 862732.
