Family History,
Archeology and the Internet!
The introductory courses on family history and archaeology, using
the new Internet access in the Library have had a great local response –
there are likely to be further collaborations with the BBC over the summer

For everyone interested in the Archaeology of the Shepway District, there is
to be a Family Hands-On Day on Saturday 6 April

refreshments throughout. No need to book – just come along!
Thanks
Ian, Karen and I would like to thank our friends and neighbours for
all their kind thoughts and words at the passing of Joy, our mother and
wife. We have been greatly touched by the sentiments expressed.
They have helped us to cope at this terribly sad and difficult time.

Lyminge Village Hall
Built for us all to use
Over the last two years, under the chairmanship of David Hunt-Cooke, the
Committee has continued the steady progress of improving the internal
facilities and keeping the exterior safe. We have installed new double
glazed windows, two new cookers, new flooring for the club room and
repainted the committee room. We are currently exploring new heating
and working with the Dramatic Society to purchase new seating for the main
hall,. We are also working in partnership with the Bowls Club, Scouts
and Parish Council to improve the external lighting in the area.
At the AGM in May 2002 some of the Committee are standing down.
WE DESPERATELY NEED NEW VOLUNTEERS TO COME FORWARD TO HELP RUN THE HALL.
If you can spare an evening or two a month to do a very useful job for the
village
of
Lyminge
, please contact:
Mike Foxon on 862073.

We are collecting used postage stamps for Guide Dogs and we would
welcome any contributions. Please leave the stamps attached to a small piece

Volunteers Needed
We are in desperate need for volunteers – on the reception desk, making
teas for the clients and helping prepare the vegetables for lunch. The
days we need people are as follows:-
Reception desk: Mondays 10.00am –
12 noon
Teas: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 10.00am -
12 noon
Vegetable prep: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays
9.00am – 10.00am
If you can help on any of the above days, could you ring the Day Centre on
01303 862364 and ask for Beverley Knight or Andrea Dodd. With many
thanks.
Nutmeg’s Rabbit Sanctuary, Etchinghill
Kind home wanted for TOM, a black and white neutered male rabbit.
Tom had been badly neglected before he came to me, and was not used to
people. He is still a bit nervous, but is responding well to the attention
he now receives, and improving every day. Can anybody carry on the good
work?
Also we have SAM, a friendly black lop-eared bunny, about six months old. He
has also been neutered, and would make an ideal pet.
If you would be able to give either of these rabbits a home, please contact
Meg on 07773 296732.

Neighbourhood Watch
Don’t buy carpets from a couple of men who are travelling the
county saying that they have been working for local companies and have some
carpet left. It’s a scam. You could end up paying over three
times the actual value of the carpet – and they don’t fit it.
Please keep reporting any Nottingham Knockers who come to your door selling
dusters, cloths etc. They say they have recently come out of prison.
They are not necessarily committing any crime, but we need to know where
they are working. Please ring 01304 218151.

Lyminge W.I.
At the March Meeting of Lyminge WI we listened to a very
entertaining talk on the
Chelsea
Hospital
given by Joy Whittington, who worked there prior to her retirement.
We all, of course, know of the Chelsea Pensioners with their distinctive
uniforms, but Joy’s talk was a window on history and it was a real
privilege to be taken behind the scenes on the day to day running of the
hospital and also to learn of some of the history. We were all
interested to learn that visitors to the hospital and grounds are welcome
(and free!).
Many Thanks

Garden Hints for April
On giving the garden its first digging over in March, I was
collecting snails by the handful. If you are opposed to using poisons,
collecting by hand is the only way. Otherwise pellets are an
alternative (check first that they are for snails as well as slugs).
The best method is to place a small amount of pellets every yard or so,
rather than blanket the entire garden. Now is also the time to clear
weeds from paths. Again, for those not wanting to use chemical means
of elimination, an old kitchen knife and lots of patience is the answer.
If you have a greenhouse, Easter is a good time to plant up hanging baskets.
The pick of the plants will be in the nurseries; they are not too large and
will make planting easier. Kept frost-free and reasonably warm, when
put out in June they should be filled out and flowering.

Sabre
Conservatories, Windows and Doors
We manufacture beautiful double-glazed PVC-u units in
our own factory to exacting standards. We can also boast of
being only one of five companies in the UK manufacturing the
fantastic slim-line Marshall Tufflex system Vertical Sliding Sash
Window, which caries a severe weather rating. So,
if you have old box sash style windows and believe PVC-u would look
out of place, think again! Maintenance free, sealed units,
spring loaded balances, slim-line appearance and decorative 'horns'
make our Vertical Slider one of the best on the market.
Remember, we are suppliers to the trade both in the UK and Europe -
they know a good window when they see one!
