LYMINGE PARISH COUNCIL ELECTION RESULTS

  JAMES BUTCHER   142 VOTES

GLENN FLOYD  132 VOTES

JAMES BUTCHER WAS ELECTED PARISH COUNCILLOR

From: Glenn Floyd, Bedingfield House, High Street, Lyminge

I would like to congratulate James Butcher on his election success on Thursday 15th March 2001.  The result was close and very disappointing for me to lose by just 10 votes.  I should have liked a larger turn-out, but I am sure the rain in the afternoon did not help matters.  It was however, a very respectable total and I consider it endorses my commitments stated in my election leaflet.  I will continue to work for the village and intend to stand again when a Parish Council seat is available,  I also intend to continue to attend Parish Council meetings (as a member of the public) to ensure I am aware of the issues being discussed, especially regarding my election commitments.  Finally, I would also like to thank the people who voted for me and the tremendous support I received from well wishers whilst delivering my election leaflet,  A special thank you goes to the small team of helpers who not only delivered leaflets for me but also gave me a lot of moral support during the campaign.

From: James Butcher, The Cedars, Church Road, Lyminge

Thank you to everyone who voted on Thursday 15th March.  It was quite an experience to witness at first hand the workings of our democratic process.  The turnout was just over 12% - apparently not untypical for a parish council election.  That said, there were clearly plenty of people who weren’t aware an election was taking place, or if they were, didn’t attach much importance to the event.  As I said in my election leaflet, I’d like to find ways to encourage interest and involvement from a wider range of people in the Parish, which to start with means making sure people are better informed about the business the Council is dealing with, and giving everyone a real chance to make a contribution.

Toddlers Group

This excellent meeting point for toddlers and their carers will be closing soon unless someone can be found to share responsibility.  It’s only one morning a week (Wednesday) and there’s a host of toys for the active toddler, a large playpen for tiny-tots and a cosy kitchen for the adults.  Ring Vicky on 863212 if you want more information.  Perhaps there’s a Granny/Grandad who would like to lend a hand?

  Table Tennis

The group looks forward to welcoming new members on a Thursday evening – ring Herbie on 862632 for details.

Lyminge Handbells – Good as New

The Lyminge Handbells were collected from the bell foundry in Loughborough on March the 14th and the first practice with the gleaming, ‘good as new’ bells took place on Sunday the 18th.  Not only do they look good but the sound is much richer too.  We are, unsurprisingly, keen to play them within the village and local area straight away.  We will be playing at Lyminge Day on the 12th of May and at other local events during the summer.  If you would like to hear the sound of our super newly refurbished bells earlier, at a special celebration or family event, then let us know some weeks in advance and we will do our best to come along.  Evenings and weekends only please.  We also hope to recruit more ringers this year to make it easier for us to attend all the events we are asked to play at. If you would like to book the ringers, or want to have a go yourself just call either Ro Edmond on 863201 or Stuart Hunnisett on 862530 for details.

LYMINGE CHURCH CHOIR

Do you enjoy music? Do you have a good sense of humour? Lyminge Church Choir is looking for new members, young or old (even if you think you can’t sing or think you are no good at music!).  Choir practices are on Fridays, 7.30 – 8.00pm (term-time only). Please contact either Ruth Goodsell on 863976 or the Church Office on 862345.

Neighbourhood Watch

The Police are looking for a stolen Peugeot 306 Estate, colour green, registration number V852 RKE, which had been stolen on 20 March from Stanford.  It was used in a robbery at Collards Lane, Elham on 21 March, when antique clocks, including two Grandfather clocks, as well as silver items were stolen.  If you have any information, please contact the Police on 01304 218151, quoting crime reference HZ/3343/01.

Sibton Park Flood Appeal

As everyone in the Village knows, this winter has been the wettest in living memory and the Cricket Club has become Lyminge’s newest tourist site, with millions of gallons of water on the pitch and well over three feet of water throughout the Clubhouse.

Now that the water is starting to recede, it is time to put our fund raising plans into action. During the past few months I’ve approached local firms and businesses, as well as our own club members, for raffle prizes and I’ve been overwhelmed with the response. I would like to take the chance to thank them publicly and also the many people who have donated to the fund.

On the evening of Saturday 21 April we will be holding a fund raising night at the Village Hall. During the evening we will be drawing the winners of the raffle as well as holding a disco. Entry to the evening will be £5.00, with all the money going into the fund. Raffle tickets are available now from members of the club and anyone who would like to purchase should see a member or may contact me on 862000. Ticket prices are 50p a ticket or a book for £2.50.

I would like to thank everyone for the support given to us during our time of need and would like to reassure everybody that with this help we will be back playing cricket at the Park and be able to restore the ground to its picturesque and serene best.

Pail McLeary, 1st XI Captain.

Reports

Parents and Friends of Lyminge School

The search for funding for the IT suite moves on and we are now approaching companies and charitable trusts. We have raised approximately £10,00 to date. Much of the success has been through the kind support of the village and surrounding area.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Mount, Ms Nightingale and Mrs. Smith for their kind donation of fabrics etc. to enable us to make craft items to sell at our School Christmas Market. Thank you to Mrs. Kirk for her kind donation to the building fund.

Many thanks to Lyn Callander who was a found-er member of the Parents and Friends of Lyminge School twenty five years ago this year, who contacted me and has offered her help and support.

We also thank Lyminge Newsagents and their customers for collecting the numerous tokens from their newspapers for the school – and last (but not least) thank you to everyone who has been saving their Tesco Computers for Schools tokens.

Etchinghill W.I.

At our well-attended meeting on March 20th we enjoyed a very interesting film show of historical homes, given by historian, Mrs. J. Page. The competition winner was Daphne Melrose. We have several interesting outings arranged for the coming months, including a trip to France. Our meetings conclude with a very appetising tea.

Lyminge Senior Citizens’ Club

On the 18th March we welcomed Mr. Phillips to our club, who showed us a lovely film on South Africa. We had a break for tea and biscuits, then had a film on Laurel and Hardy. From the laughter during it, everyone very much enjoyed it. D. Bain.

Lyminge W.I.

Our first meeting, held during March, was very well attended and members thoroughly enjoyed the description of “Life in Africa”, given by our President, Fran Bailey. New members and visitors are always welcome. If you would like further details, please ring Lyn Callander on 862799.

Sibton Park Cricket Club’s ‘100’ Club winners in March were:

There will be no charge, but donations to the Demelza House Children’s Hospice will be appreciated.

Gardening Tips for April

With unprecedented winder rain and the cold snap mid-March, gardeners have been unable to do little if any, outside work, so April this year will have to be a time for catching up. Lawns, in particular, need some T.L.C. Rake well and spike before a first mowing, followed by feeding and maybe and application of moss killer. Borders need to be weeded and mulched and some attention paid to slugs and snails, which are already making short work of spring bulbs as they flower. We will have to offer up a collective gardeners’ plea for a warm, sunny April, without any seasonal showers!

Sabre Conservatories, Windows and Doors
We manufacture beautiful double-glazed PVC-u units in our own factory to exacting standards. We can also boast of being only one of five companies in the UK manufacturing the fantastic slim-line Marshall Tufflex system Vertical Sliding Sash Window, which caries a severe weather rating. So, if you have old box sash style windows and believe PVC-u would look out of place, think again! Maintenance free, sealed units, spring loaded balances, slim-line appearance and decorative 'horns' make our Vertical Slider one of the best on the market. Remember, we are suppliers to the trade both in the UK and Europe - they know a good window when they see one!
