PRESENTATION TO RAY HILL

Lyminge is a very active village; it is a caring community, which I have personally benefited from several times. It is also very generous.
My thinking at the commencement of the collection for Ray was how to record and acknowledge the money coming. Your generosity quickly appeared to quell my worry on this point. Twice I found a £10 note on the mat on arriving home - no envelope - no name. Again a £5 note - no name or address. Mrs Yvonne Broadbridge from Lyminge newsagents joined in the collection experiencing the same amazing reaction. The newsletter editor helped both by entries in the newsletter and by collecting money.
My forecast was of £300 to give quietly to Ray. The collection slowed down at £450 but after another insertion in the newsletter there was an explosion and the total quickly raced to £715.00. Ray's honesty, dedication to his job, and a smile delivered with the milk through whatever hardships he went through to reach our streets showed how well he was respected. Ray, we are proud of you and wish you a well deserved long and happy retirement
Bert Lewis

THANK YOU

I would like to thank everyone who bought my milk and other goods over the years I have been here. I would also like to thank my tea mate, Bert, who started the collection and made this possible. Thank you so much for the cards and gifts you have given me as well as the results of this wonderful collection. It was a total surprise. I have enjoyed serving you all and even those I did not serve. You have all talked to me or waved to me in passing, even the children at the 'bus stops. You have made my twenty or so years in the area very pleasant.
All the best Ray Hill, your milkman and friend.
PS. It would not be right if I did not say 'Good luck on the Lotto!

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Sir
In the July Newsletter the Lyminge Association Committee stated, under "Parish History", that it had offered help to the Society; it is now perplexed as it is unaware of any overtures of this nature. In February an audacious letter on unheaded notepaper, signed by an untitled person, was received which inferred the Society was being 'wound up' and implied an interest in acquiring its archives Our part-quoted response was to assert that the Society remains active and that its position is well-founded.
The Society has existed for more than 35 years with the sole aim of promoting History and continues to do so. It is currently employed in preparing various works on Lyminge and its environs and would welcome the help of any persons who would be interested in writing short articles on the history of local flora, fauna, farming, wildlife, public transport, the railway, health, society and social conditions associated with the past of this area. If the referred cartographer is interested in helping with local mapping the Society would welcome the contact.
Yours sincerely
Mary Button, Chairman, Lyminge Historical Society

Editors note:
Apparently going back more than some of us can remember The Lyminge Association had some relationship with the Historical Society who would help to record the local history mentioned in our constitution. So having heard some news of their popular talks ending and their archives being sent to storage, The Lyminge Association thought that they should send a letter.
We were hoping that Mary could attend part of one of our meetings to discuss how things were and how we could help keep history alive Hey presto, before you know it someone thinks that we are 'treading on toes'. We are sorry if this is how it came across.
The Lyminge Association is pleased that the Historical Society is encouraging new talent covering many areas of research and would offer our support, should it be required, to publish these documents for everyone to enjoy.

NEW GARDEN OF REMEMBRANCE IN LYMINGE CHURCHYARD

Earlier in the year a joint meeting was held between the Parish Council and the Parochial Church Council (PCC) to which all villagers were invited to discuss the proposals to establish a new Garden of Remembrance, for the interment of ashes following cremation, in the churchyard. It was explained that the present churchyard was almost full and that there were only 6 more spaces for burials. The proposal involved using space in the south west corner of the churchyard and the plans were fully discussed at the meeting.

Following a successful application to Canterbury Diocese, the PCC has been granted permission to go ahead with the proposal and the new Garden of Remembrance is now being created. Work will continue through the Autumn to tidy up the area by sowing grass seed and planting trees and a hedgerow. This is being carried out to reflect the character of the churchyard and the landscape around it. The new Garden will be called St Ethelburga's Garden and a stone will be erected in the centre, sculpted from Kentish Ragstone, to reflect the new name.

The first burial of ashes has now taken place, and relatives will be invited to have a stone plaque in memory of their loved one, in accordance with the Diocesan Regulations which have been approved for use by the PCC.
Rev. Peter Ashman, Rector

FRIENDS OF KENT CHURCHES

This charity collects money through subscriptions and fund raising events, to help with building repair work on Kent Churches.
The purpose of the charity is to ensure that we in Kent can continue to enjoy the architectural beauty of and history associated with our town and village Churches. Any Church, of any denomination, in need of repair, can apply to the 'Friends' for a contribution to their restoration fund. The charity pays out as much as £100,000, in a single year, to deserving Churches. St Ethelburga Church in Lyminge received a grant last year to help with roof repairs.
The main fund-raising event each year, is the sponsored bike ride. Teams of riders throughout Kent, complete a cycle route of their choice, visiting Churches along the way. Their sponsor forms are stamped at each Church, and refreshments are provided at many Churches. At the end of the day, tired but happy cyclists return home, clutching their sponsor forms.
Sponsored Bike Ride
This year the 'Churches bike ride' takes place on Saturday 9th September. As usual, we will start at St Ethelburga, Lyminge, and will follow our usual route. Last year we raised over £900. One half of this went directly to the Churches of our choice, the other half went to the Friends of Kent Churches. If you would like to join our team, or perhaps prefer to go it alone, please contact me for more details. If you are not participating but know someone who is - please sponsor them!

We do not have a meeting in August but thanks to Stella, 41 members and colleagues had a very enjoyable day at Leeds Castle. The weather was just perfect. One member had friends from Canada staying with her who joined us for the trip and they were simply amazed at the beauty of the whole area. They will be returning to Canada with many English 'nick nacks'.
Our next special will be at the home of Gill le Cras for a cream tea. It is always a peaceful and colourful garden. We hope for good weather.
A very warm welcome awaits any visitors to our next meeting on Tuesday 19th September when our speaker, Mrs D'Archy will talk on 'Ghosts of the Tower'. The competition is for a spooky picture. Our meetings conclude with a scrumptious tea. Further information can be obtained by calling Dottie on 862141 or Joy on 862538.
