People of Lyminge

Having grown up in Lyminge in the 80s & 90s, I may have spent the last few years looking back at the village through rose tinted glasses.
After not visiting the village properly for well over 5 years, I found myself in the area last week and had a good wander round my old stamping ground. So many things had changed (to my perspective) - Mayfield Stores is now gone, along with several other local merchants - this is understandable if regrettable. But I was most appalled at how the villagers had let the place start to rot down. Entering the village, I saw the village sign which once proudly boasted "Best Kept Village 1998", but now is rotten and sad. I remember when that sign went up along with country dancing and much festivity. Shortly after, I went to the park below the well: a place which has always been somewhat magical to discover that the Nailbourne was completely overgrown and full of litter.
I remember living in a village where everyone was proud of the appearance of each and every corner. I urge... no, BEG... you all to not allow the village to slip into disrepair.
In my local area, one weekend a year all that are able are asked to help clear the river banks, and there is real community effort to ensure that in this weekend the area stays beautiful for the rest of the year. Please let me know, and I will come down and help you if you consider this for Lyminge.
Best regards,
Matt Butchers

Thank You to Age Concern

I think it is time to praise and give credit to the people who run the Lyminge Branch of Age Concern at Everist House. They are always so very kind, cheerful and helpful that it is a pleasure to deal with their many and varied initiatives to help the local and increasingly elderly population of Lyminge and surrounding districts.
Personally I jumped with joy when I read in a Lyminge letter a few months ago that Age Concern was starting a machine wash and ironing service for the incredibly cheap charge of only £3.50 just when my Hoovermatic De Luxe twin tub had decided the time had come for it to retire and, I must admit, rightly so after 20 years of faithful service.
Now ‘washing day blues’ are a thing of the past for me thanks to a caring band of people, bless them all, upstairs, downstairs and, especially, in the laundry chamber at Everist House!
Anna of Etchinghill

I am interested in knowing if you could provide me with any information concerning the crash of a craft in Lyminge Forest at 9:45pm on March 20th, 1984. I was wondering if you had any background on this incident and, if so, could you provide me with any details.
If you could help me out with this enquiry, I would be extremely grateful as I know you are very busy.
Thanks

Congratulations to Lyminge Bowls Club

With the outdoor bowls season coming to a close, a very successful season was had both team wise and individually.
Ladies Captain Anita reached the finals of a county singles competition. John Norton and Peter Foster were narrowly beaten in the Divisional Final of the county pairs. Bill Strange and Rosemary Brooks lost in the final of the Shepway mixed pairs. John and Eva Williams will have reached the National Final of the British regional mixed pairs to be held at Melton Mowbray next year. In their respective Shepway leagues both the men and ladies finished in 3rd place. On Bank Holiday Monday an all day Shepway League competition was held at New Romney Bowls Club. Lyminge men won 6 out of 7 games and won the Wood Cup. With the ladies points added to the men’s the club was presented with the Top Club Trophy.
For a village club not a bad achievement. Well done!

Tour of Britain Cycle? Race?

A crowd of nearly 80 people lined the corner of Yew Tree Cross waiting for the cyclists to race by only to be dampened, not only by the slight drizzle but also by the news of the race going into confusion. It seemed that the riders lost the plot at the start of the stage while trying to get out of Rochester and had thrown their toys out of the pram and were not racing merely cycling around, albeit at a quicker pace than most of us could do it. This meant that only about half of the crowd stayed or reappeared to witness the tour as it arrived some 2 hours late.
We did begin to wonder if this was the Tour of Britain Motorcycle Race as a series of numbered riders on motorbikes swept through including 30 Police riders, about 30 tour marshals and a few various press bikes. Suddenly the bike riders headed to the corner and to be honest you could have thrown a large tarpaulin over the whole lot of them. We cheered and waved our freebie handouts and within less than 30 seconds they were gone, apart from the circus of support vehicles carrying extra wheels, water bottles, lycra etc.
So if you missed it, unlucky, because we had a good community laugh at the whole proceedings (except for the lady who had her car driven into). Can't wait for the Tour De France next year!!
Mike Foxon

Unwanted printer or toner cartridges?

Rather than throw away used printer and toner cartridges recycle them in aid of charity.
The Christchurch Children’s Project is a local Shepway charity that helps provide both material support by financing equipment and one-to-one support for children with special needs. They may be able to help children you might know who need extra support. To find out visit the Christchurch Children’s Project website:
www.cc-childrensproject.org.uk
Like all charities Christchurch Children’s Project needs to constantly raise money and you can help by simply dropping your used printer and toner cartridges in the box at the Lyminge Library porch-way. Who knows, it may be a child you know who benefits from your recycling efforts.

ETCHINGHILL W.I.
Our September meeting was very well attended after the summer break. It was lovely to have Jean Bilham back after her operation. Joy presented 7 members with birthday posies. A new member, Alison, was welcomed.
The speaker was Mr D'arcy who spent 23 years in the Tower of London as a Yeoman of the Guard. Firstly we were shown slides of various activities that are involved in the Tower. He then related how some of the ghost stories originated (most amusing) and in fact had us all wondering how true they were. This was a most informative and interesting talk.
The competition for a spooky picture was won by Mary Hickmott.
Our next meeting on 17th October is our birthday meeting and we have invited members from other institutes. They have been offered tables to sell their various crafts. The speaker on this day will be Mr R Parvin on The first stage show of the Black and White Minstrels'. The competition is for a mask! We will conclude with a real party tea.
