A New Pub opens in Lyminge by Graham Caldow

The Coach and Horses in Lyminge has been in a canter rather than a gallop for the last couple of ; years as locals, including myself, went elsewhere. Turning the pub around seems an unenviable task ' but speaking to Ken and Christine Kidd, the new owners, they certainly have the desire and a vision for what a local pub should be.
They started modestly by getting the pub signboard retouched, and then went on to bigger things like repainting the outside, doors and windows included. They have been working hard inside too, with everything freshly painted and a completely redone the upstairs part where the pool table used to be. Now it is an intimate, non smoking area. Over the two weeks, until 7th October (the pub will be closed Monday - Friday lunchtime, but open as normal on weekends) they are completely renovating the toilets. Some work has been done on the garden but as the summer is over they will be focusing on the fence and getting new furniture for next year.
Their other plans for the future are impressive as well. Ken has contacted the tree officer at Shepway and has a job number to have the overhanging trees at the back pruned. Then they have plans to extend the garden along the back and put more seating so we will be able to enjoy the view over Tayne Field next summer with a drink - how many times have we all said that's what the pub should do?
Decent food is also something many of us want from our local pub. At the moment they do bar snacks, ploughmans sandwiches etc. Shortly they will start serving light meals and also Sundays Roasts. Christine wants to get a full menu in place by Christmas and the restaurant is being refurbished. There is one small obstacle holding this up: the dining room ceiling, it needs to come down! Fortunately one of Ken's many hats is as a builder, so he knows what needs to be done.
Outward appearances are one thing but there is a lot more that makes a pub than how well it is decorated. This is Ken and Christine's first pub of their own but they both have many years of experience in the trade. Perhaps this might be the right balance because they know what's what and also have enthusiasm that comes with their first very own pub.
I must confess that I have not been in the Coach for well over a year but I have been in there a couple of times recently and have noticed a very different atmosphere. There is a little more banter between the bars for a start. There are people I have not seen before and children are welcome. The darts team even has enough new people to form an additional team. The juke box has gone; replaced by low background music over which you can talk. As a CAMRA member, my memory of a year ago was of real ale which didn't taste as good as it should; this time I can report both the London Pride and Flowers IPA were very well kept. Sorry I forgot to ask about the bottled wine, but the one thing Ken and Chris are is open to suggestions. They both have that easy, friendly manner that is so important to running a pub. Turning the Coach and Horse around, I think, is one of the most difficult jobs in Lyminge. But it is happening. So many people responded in their Parish Plan Questionnaire and Three Wishes that they wanted a local, family friendly pub; if we genuinely want this we have to support the new publicans. I would urge everyone in the village to give the Coach and Horses another chance and pop in for a drink. I think you will find, like me, you feel welcome once again in your local.

A Big Thank You
to Chris and Ken, our new Landlady and Landlord of the Coach and Horses, Lyminge. With their kind and generous support and donation we raised £200 for Cancer Research UK. The winner was Lea Hadleigh and Ken runner up. Coach and Horses Ladies Dart Team.

Rep. for Cancer Research

Thank You

A big THANK YOU to all those who were kind enough to give so generously in sponsoring me on the walk for the FOLKESTONE HEART SUPPORT GROUP which took place on Sunday 18th September. As a result of you generosity I raised £213.

Thank you once again

Cricket Update
by Katie Guy

How many of us are aware that alongside our village, and very much part of its life is a centre to provide entertainment, fun, exercise, fresh air and good companionship for all of us, namely Sibton Park Cricket Club.
Last month there was a special week when all of us were involved in some way. The Vice Presidents of the club were invited and welcomed to a truly fantastic lunch by the ladies of the club. We very much appreciated the care that went into the event and we would like to say thank you to the people who ensured comfort and pleasure for us ail.
The club is always ready to welcome anyone interested in welfare of the game of cricket. An annual sub and your support for the players from the boundary line or in the very comfortable pavilion is welcome. You can enjoy tea with the cricketers or other beverages from the bar to the background of goodwill and companionship.
The club has several teams who play at home and away, and there is a very strong Colt (young cricketers) emphasis, where youngsters learn not only how to understand and play the game of cricket, but they will absorb its finer and long-lasting aspects as they learn to respect each other as team members and develop a strong sense of fairness.
There is comfortable seating outdoors (bring a cushion) and inside with ringside views.
With your support of Sibton Park Cricket Ground you are following in the footsteps of cricketers, some famous, some not so, and the cricket green itself is surely one of the loveliest in all England. So while this season is over, make a note to come along next season and see what you missed.

STOP PRESS

Well, well and HOWZAT! We are right behind our superb cricket team in winning and bringing back the precious Ashes, last held under Mike Gatting's team in 1986, a long time ago. Who has not been riveted to their TV, sharing the hopes and frustration of our English cricket team. Michael Vaughn led his team on the victory parade and they certainly have given us something to be proud of, revelling in that short window of time, and putting on view, with well deserved praise, all that is best in the world of sport.
The team have given a renaissance to the game of cricket and to the joy of a wonderful team spirit and brotherhood in the field.
When have you last witnessed the joy, excitement and pride fulfilled in all of us as we share the good old English game of cricket? It touched one and all. Let's keep it going.

Recently the mower has shattered glass and bottles which have found their way onto the grass. This could be very dangerous to other people. The PCC respectfully requests that you do not use glass containers at all.
There are now two wheeley bins at the Church. Please could all dead flowers and plants be put in the brown bin and all plastic, metal and oasis from flowers and wreaths be put in the green bin. We do not have a caretaker for the churchyard and despite clearing up from time to time, the area continues to become untidy very quickly.

ART AND CULTURE CLUB
DOOR TO DOOR TRIPS

The Editor wishes to apologise for cutting short the notice regarding the above club. It has been repeated complete on the next page.

Arts and Culture Club/Door to Door Trips

Do you enjoy going to see West End shows, operas, ballets, comedies and thrillers? Or what about visiting houses and gardens of beauty and historical interest? Would you like to make new friends with people of a similar interest in your local area?

Based on a similar arts and culture club we have successfully been running in the Maidstone and Tonbridge area for the past few years, and following my subsequent move locally, I am now setting up a division in the Lyminge-Elham Valley area.

Planned trips for the October to December period include Champagne Afternoon Tea at the Ritz, followed by a tour of London’s Christmas lights and tickets to see the new smash hit musical Billy Elliot.

All trips include the option of being picked up from and returned to your home in either our six seater taxi or small minibus, saving you any concern of travelling alone at night and the hassle of driving or using public transport (no more racing to make last train home!)

To be put on my mailing list please give me, Catherine Rosenberg, a call on 01303 862 421. I look forward to meeting you soon!

Lyminge Dramatic Society – It’s Pantomime time!

Well, not quite yet, but rehearsals have started for Lyminge Dramatic Society’s pantomime. Stuart Hunnisett has written this pantomime based on the fairy story “Rumpelstiltskin” by the Brothers Grimm and it promises to be a treat for the whole family. All the usual pantomime ingredients will be there. Please make a note in your diary for the dates of the panto which are November 27th to December 3rd at Lyminge Village Hall. Evening performances will start at 7.45pm and there will be matinees at 4.45 pm on Friday and 4.00pm on Saturday.

Tickets will go on sale on 5th November at Haxtons Estate Agents, Lyminge. Book early to avoid disappointment!

We are pleased to announce the start of the Lyminge Drama Club for 8 to 15 year olds at Lyminge Methodist Hall on Friday evenings. Sponsored by the Society, the sessions will initially be held between 6pm and 7pm and will be run by Amanda Rynston of Little Acorns Performing Arts. The sessions will increase to one and a half hours once the children start working on a script. Various theatre visits and workshops have been arranged and the children will get the opportunity to take part in the Society’s pantomime. The cost is £4-00 per session (excluding the various visits) for each of 12 sessions and the £48-00 is payable in advance. For more details phone Amanda on 862049 or Liz Parrish on 862748.

ETCHINGHILL W.I.

There was no meeting in August but that did not stop members enjoying themselves. Several members visited the House of Parliament and had a most interesting day and it was thumbs up all round. Our annual historical outing was a visit to Hever Castle and those of us who went had a wonderful fun day out.

Unfortunately Mrs M Webster was unable to speak to us at our September meeting as she was still recoving from surgery, however, we enjoyed an afternoon entering a photograph quiz which was won by Gill Le Cras. As usual we had an excellent tea prepared by our hostesses.

A forthcoming outing on 27th September will be a cream tea at the Elham Valley tearooms.

LYMINGE HANDBELLS
The popular Lyminge Handbell ringers have had a busy summer with events in Elham, Hythe, Lympne and recently a wedding at Bilsington Priory. We ring at formal and informal events and are quite happy to come to your home for a special celebration. All we need is a large table for our bells and a donation of at least £35 for the Pilgrims Hospice. We will also play tunes appropriate to the occasion from our classical and contemporary repertoire. Just call Ro Edmond on 863201 or Stuart Hunnisett on 862530. Alternatively you can e-mail Stuart on stuarthunnisett@hotmail.co.uk
