To: EYE Leaders, Parents, Helpers     From: Simon Rosenberg-Chairperson - 16th October 2006

Re: Weekly Support - URGENT HELP NEEDED

Firstly may I apologise to all our members for having to cancel the club night on Monday 9th October. I am aware how disappointing this was and it was not a decision I relished making.

The voluntary work and effort that has been displayed by each and every helper so far has been instrumental in the success of the EYE and our members rely on this continued support in order for the EYE to flourish. At the current time we have a list of only 12 regular adult leaders balanced against approximately 50 members. Of those 12 adult leaders, a limited number have had to be relied upon to ensure the EYE can open and have been in attendance sometimes weeks at a time.

To that end, I am asking for further help from ALL parents/guardians of our young members to ensure the EYE can operate safely and efficiently. It is paramount that there are at least 3 (preferably 4) adult leaders in attendance each Monday night. This will ensure that in the event of an incident which draws the attention of a leader(s) there is still sufficient supervisory cover.

If we consider the phrase "many hands make light work," if each parent/guardian volunteered their services, then their time would only need be called upon potentially 4-5 times per year. I understand that for some, sparing such time is simply not practicable and I would certainly never question that. However, we are in desperate need of further support.

I would like to invite you to attend our club night on Monday 13th November to meet with some of the management team. The aim will be to engage all potential helpers and plan in dates that you are able to assist with basic supervision at club nights, helping with the tuck shop, opening/closing up and ensuring members sign in and out.

If on the night of the 13th November, insufficient offers of help are presented then some tough decisions regarding the future of the club may have to be made. So if you are a current leader or can offer you help, the members of the EYE need you. In return, opportunities for training and development exist as do numerous fun trips out and the chance to have an overtly positive effect on your community and the young people within it.

For more information, please call Simon on 01303 862421.
Thank you.

ETCHINGHILL W.I.
In October we celebrated our 84th birthday. Business was kept to a minimum.
Joy greeted guests from other W.I .'s who were able to display and sell the various crafts, its amazing the talents of the W.I. ladies. Many bargains were quickly snapped up.
We had Ron Kenny as our entertainer, always very popular. Firstly we had a musical quiz where many of us remembered the tunes but could not recall the words or titles!! However, it was all good fun. It was then tea time when a really scrumptious spread was placed on the tables with many varieties of sandwiches and cakes - all home-made. After this a big raffle took place while Ron Kenny played music for us to have a "sing along" to conclude our Birthday Party.
On 21st November we will be holding our A.G.M. so would all members please come along to vote for your new committee. The competition is to make a soft toy for charity.
As a very friendly W.I. we are always pleased to welcome visitors to our meetings held at the Etchinghill Village Hall at 2.30pm.
Please 'phone Dottie Cross on 862141 or Joy Bartley on 862538 for any information required

Friends of Kent Churches sponsored bike ride
I am sure that all those involved with this year's event will be delighted to know that we raised over £800. Bearing in mind that a few regulars could not be with us this year, the rest of us, including new recruits, did amazingly well. Mind you, we have some resolute customers and local shopkeepers! The 'feel-good' factor generated by this event is due largely to the willing and generous support we receive from our sponsors.
We seem always to strike lucky with the weather, and this year was no exception. 12 adults and 3 children took part in a 25 mile scenic route that included visits to about 25 Churches (and one pub). We raced around the course at an average speed of about 4 mph, enjoying glorious sunshine the whole day. Thanks again to all those who took part and those who sponsored a rider. Well done Lyminge and district!

Sellindge Family History Classes 2007
Following the success of this year's family history classes I am hoping to re-run the course in the New Year, if enough people are interested. I can guarantee that once you have started you won't want to stop!
The classes will be one evening a month for six months and will begin in January. As a result of new commitments I shall only be able to run one class this time and so places will be limited and on a first come first served basis. Christmas Lights
This year, on the 2nd December there is to be an official "turning on" of the Christmas tree lights! It will start at 4.00 p.m outside Haxtons Estate Agents and it would be lovely to have as many people there as possible to join the festive occasion.
Hopefully the children from Lyminge Primary will be there to lead the carol singing and the Lyminge Handbell Ringers will entertain you. There will be seasonal refreshments on sale and, if all goes according to plan, there will be a surprise guest to turn on the lights. So don't go home after the St Nicholas Fayre, but make your way to the Christmas tree.

PARISH COUNCIL
HOUSING NEEDS SURVEY
COMPLETED

The Parish Council, in partnership with The Rural Housing Trust has completed The Housing Needs Survey and produced a full report.

The Parish Council wanted to quantify the extent and clarify what type and size of housing, if any, was needed which the private market could not provide. Survey forms were delivered to every household in the Parish and prepaid envelopes provided. 1500 forms were despatched and 369 returned. 25% an average response in accordance to The Rural Housing Trusts experience. The report said that the average house prices in 2006 were as follows, Terraced House £200,713, Semi Detached £184,370, Detached £261,111. We have 91 Local Authority properties for rent in the Parish the majority of which are for elderly people. We also have five Housing Association properties. The survey also concluded that 59% of respondents wanted additional housing whilst 32% were opposed to any new development, 9% did not express a preference. The survey identified a demand/need from 13 families (including single parents) 8 couples, 12 single people, 1 set of siblings and 4 people wanting to share a property with a friend.

The Parish Council will consider the full report and debate the findings at Full Parish Council in the New Year. The Parish Council will decide if further action is required in identifying land for development or consider taking no further action for the foreseeable future.

An example of how being a Parish Councillor can make a difference to the future of your Parish

CAR PARK COMPROMISE

The Parish Council welcome the introduction of free parking for the first hour in Lyminge village carpark and thank Cllr Monk and Shepway District Council for this vital concession. The Parish Council are still however, at a loss to understand how this ill thought out parking charge can possibly make any contribution to alleviating Shepway's financial difficulties. Cllr Monk attended Parish Council and the Council made it very clear that they do not support the charges under any circumstances. Cllr Monk also sought our views on resident parking charges. It may come as no surprise and was made very clear that we do not want or feel it appropriate to introduce these money making charges in a rural community. We will be asking for a breakdown of the profits from the car park charges and will let you know!
Parish Councillors can make a difference

PARISH COUNCIL UPDATE ON PROJECTS

Street Furniture - A new salt bin of considerable expense was delivered as requested, to Meriden Park Etchinghill. Within days of its delivery it was substantially damaged by vandals, if anyone has any information regarding the culprits please contact our Community Warden Gary Harrison 07977982185.

Two new benches will shortly be fitted outside the Library and at the bottom of Tayne Field. These again are to replace broken and damaged wooden benches and we would appeal to anyone seeing acts of vandalism to report it to our Community Warden immediately. The metal bench at Yew Tree Cross has also been repaired and replaced due to vandalism. Our Community Warden has an excellent track record for tracking down the culprits and subsequently ensuring they repair or make amends for their actions. Therefore as previously requested please let him know if you see any acts of vandalism.

Broad Street House Footpath - The Parish Council with the help of our County Councillor Susan Carey have been pursuing the issue of creating a footpath outside Broad Street House, creating a safe link between Etchinghill and Lyminge. The County Council have, without informing the Parish Council (who own the land) laid a path along most of Ethelburga Way. We have questioned the logic behind spending on a pedestrian/bridle way and not a vital community link and road safety issue. We will with the help of Cllr Carey pursue this important issue and report on our slow but hopefully positive progress.

Village Tidy - If you wish to help reduce litter/ weeds in Lyminge please meet at the junior playground Tayne Field Sunday 26th Nov 2.00pm

LYMINGE PARISH COUNCIL & VOLUNTARY ORGANISATIONS VACANCIES

The Parish Council welcomed a new Councillor at its September meeting, Councillor Gore of Woodlands Road Lyminge. Whilst we look forward to a positive contribution from Cllr Gore we still need more Councillors. Along with all clubs societies and organisations we are in need of volunteers. We all cherish our villages and choose to live in our rural environments. We all rely on volunteers to keep, develop and provide services, entertainment and care. If more people do not take an active role we will start to lose the very things that make our Parish a great place to live. Please help one of our groups. We also need more Councillors please help us to make our Parish a great place to live. Contact Cllr Glenn Floyd 862 732.
