Father Christmas tells me that he
will be visiting Lyminge on the evening of Wednesday
21st December. Stennings and Haxtons have kindly agreed
to be collecting points and parcels should be taken to
them during their opening hours. Please clearly address
the parcels, as it is usually dark when Father Christmas
reaches Lyminge. There is a charge of £1 per address and
all parcels should be at a collecting point by 5.00pm on
20th December. If you would like Father Christmas to
visit early for small children please advise us when
depositing the parcels.

We are currently looking for someone to receive the bulk
of the newsletters and count them into bundles ready for
our deliverers to take out.The only delivering you would
need to do would be to two addresses in Lyminge. You
would need to be a car driver as the boxes may be too
heavy to carry far. A little job for someone recently
retired? Please contact 01303 862488

An Appreciation
by Katie Guy
The residents of Lyminge and
thereabouts have reason to be grateful to the Editor and
company involved in putting before us the monthly
newsletter - one of the many advantages of living here.
We are kept up to date with every aspect of the
village's daily routine. There must be something of
interest for each one of us. We, the recipients of this
interesting budget, would like to express our thanks to
those who produce this daily calendar. Could we perhaps
say thank you in a practical way by continuing to take
the trouble to keep our village clean and tidy? We could
aim high and possibly merit the title of "Best Kept
Village". We have been very close.
Shepway District Council seems to be
working hard to provide the necessary containers and the
collection of them. The residents have excelled in
planting up their gardens to produce scene of riotous
colour and beauty and gardens are not made by saying,
"Oh, how beautiful" and sitting in the shade, pleasant
though that is.
Age Concern have succeeded in
providing for everyone in need the services of an
experienced information officer. Just ask for Ms Sue
Chitty of Age Concern (Lyminge Branch). Tayne Field,
with seats and always well cut grass, is to be
appreciated and enjoyed especially in this out of season
summer. Sit there and take note of the newly decorated
village pub (built 1888), and the Lyminge Methodist
Chapel, which rose from the ashes by the efforts of the
elder statesman Mr Frank Clayson and his workers. The
chapel really hit the headlines this weekend,
deservedly, in producing a unique exhibition when a boot
full of necessities and some luxuries was shown ready to
be used in the fishing industry in the Sudan. Practical
Christianity in action! The result of really expert
planning and production by the Lyminge people.
It is not nice to leave all these
good happenings for my next comment. But it has to be
said, and re-said, Tayne Field was marred by dog-fouling
last week - and remember that our young children are
using the field daily.
Someone must have an uneasy
conscience! But, back to where we came in! Thank you to
the Editor and to all the people who help you and help
us by keeping us so well informed on the happenings in
Lyminge village. |
Dear Editor:
Re: Folkestone School for Girls
This notice is addressed to each girl
from the above school that took the No. 17 bus from
Folkestone to Lyminge at 15.35 hours on Tuesday 11th
October 2005. As a passenger on that bus I am very
concerned at the anti-social and disgusting behaviour
being displayed by girls from Lyminge. As soon as the
conductor for Stagecoach leaves the bus at Cheriton, so
the behaviour deteriorates. You are old enough to know
better. You have proved by attending grammar school that
you are clever. You all alight from the bus at the
various bus stops in Lyminge.
What are you thinking about when you
scream so loudly for no reason, how do you expect adults
to know when you are being attacked and need help and
assistance? Why do you jump up and down on the seats and
fight each other? How do you know that some of those
people who have to endure your behaviour might be the
very ones who put money into funds for young people in
the village and may wish to employ you? What sort of
impression are you having on them? How do you expect the
bus driver to do his job, when you are doing everything
in your powers to distract him or her? Do you really
want to arrive home safely?
Trust has been placed in you, to
attend school, teachers have worked hard to get the best
from you. Your parents have worked hard to pay for the
bus pass and get you a better life, which is the wish of
each generation. Is this how you repay them?
What do we have to do, as the older
generation to make you proud to live in a community that
does care, as we do in Lyminge. To those girls who are
not misbehaving, congratulations, please talk to those
girls who are giving you a bad name and ask, why?
Name & Address Supplied.
Perhaps someone who was on this
bus might like to reply? It will be published
anonymously if you wish. |

ETCHINGHILL UPDATE
Community Land – goal posts… Our sincere thanks must
be recorded to Shepway District Council, and in
particular Wilbert Greaves, their Sports Officer, for
the “long-term loan” of two sets of very sturdy
demountable goal posts and nets, together with two sets
of football vests, for our local youngsters to use..
A good number of the youngsters turned out to meet
Wilbert when he delivered them and they all struck up a
really good rapport.. Rodney Watts, who had been
liaising with Wilbert, managed to get some photos and
“action shots”, and hopefully these may be published in
the local press.
Youth Club…
Following a plea for helpers, a good number of folk
have come forward to help lead and staff a possible
Youth Club on Monday evenings – it is early days yet,
but please “watch this space” for further details..
Multi-Sports Court…
An “Open Morning” was held on Saturday 15th October
at the Village Hall and showing the various aspects of
the Court and the surrounding landscaping, picnic area
and the revised pond area for ecological activities”… we
are so grateful to all those who have put so much effort
into trying to make this a reality.. please, again,
“watch this space” for updates..
Annual General Meeting…
Our AGM is to be held on Sunday 6th November at the
Village Hall commencing at 3.00 pm… everybody is
welcome, and all qualify simply by being resident in the
Village.. please come along for just a short while and
learn a bit more about “life in Etchinghill”..
A Feather in our Cap
Hello I have been meaning to write and tell you how
much I enjoy reading your Lyminge Newsletter each month.
I wish I could attend the Family History Session on Oct
15, as my late husband’s ancesters came from Lyminge. I
visited your town a few years ago and spent an enjoyable
few hours with the Rector and his wife. He directed me
to Canterbury Cathedral for records.
He was very kind but I have forgotten his name.
My husband’s family were Mannerings. I don’t suppose you
have anyone living in Lyminge now with that name that
might be related.
Thank you again for sending me the Newsletter. Good luck
to the new owners of the Coach and Horses. I remember I
made enquiries there when I arrived and a took a
picture. Good memories.
Best Wishes
Pat Mannering Robertson
A Politician for the Guy
This year marks the 400th anniversary of the attempt
to blow up the Houses of Parliament by Guy Fawkes and
his group of co-conspirators. In 1605 Guy Fawkes and
friends, having formulated their plan, known as the
'Gunpowder Plot', rolled 36 barrels of gunpowder into
the cellars of the Houses of Parliament, and were
waiting for the king to arrive when guards broke in and
arrested them.
Now on November 5th across the country (including
Lyminge Village hall 6.30 PM) people go to organised
fireworks displays. They stand around the bonfire, watch
fireworks and burn an effigy of Guy Fawkes. This
suggests that maybe people rather admire the cheek of
Guy Fawkes, trying to blow up Parliament, and that's why
they celebrate Bonfire night, rather than -celebrating
the fact that his plot failed and he was caught!

ETCHINGHILL W.I.
Our meeting on 18th October was a celebration of
our 83rd birthday. We invited friends from other W.I.’s
in the area. Our speaker, Paul Harris from Radio Kent,
gave us an entertaining talk on ‘Variety through the
Ages’ and had us all laughing at some of his hilarious
stories.
We had a sumptuous tea finishing with a beautiful
birthday cake made by Gill Le Cras and decorated by
Daphne Melrose. After tea we were able to browse the
various craft stalls where there were many very
reasonably priced items which enabled us to do some
Christmas shopping.
Our team entered the ‘Top team quiz’ and although we did
not win we were pleased with our score. (Thank you
Dottie for stepping in at very short notice.)
June Price won the competition for ‘A Theatre

Door to Door Trips
An article advertising the above club appeared
in both the September and October Lyminge Newsletter.
Prior to print Catherine Rosenberg had asked for this
article to be removed as due to family commitments (a
new baby), she felt unable to give the Club her fullest
attention. Unfortunately, due to an administrative error
by the Newsletter team the article was not removed.
Both the newsletter and Catherine would like to
apologise to anyone who either attended the village hall
meeting or telephoned to request information regarding
the club and has been disappointed to learn that it is
not proceeding.
Catherine is aware of a company that offers a similar
service and is happy to provide you with their contact

Once again, we apologise for any disappointment caused.

Friends of Kent Churches
sponsored bike ride
This took place on 10th September, when about 15
of us set off from Lyminge Parish Church and pedalled
around towns and villages in this area, visiting as many
Churches as possible on the way. Despite reports of
cloudbursts and other forms of bad weather not too far
away, we enjoyed perfect weather for the whole day. In
fact, some of our party cooled off with a dip in the sea
as we reached Sandgate sea front. The rest of us waited
impatiently for them at the Clarenden Inn, fiddling with
our pints!
Those with children had had enough by now and retired to
the beach, leaving 10 of us to tackle Sandgate Hill and
beyond. We divided further on the way back to Lyminge,
when certain ‘old hands’ insisted on taking devious
short cuts (including off-road) and on cycling up
impossibly steep hills. One of our new recruits, who
stayed with this renegade group mildly commented that he
had ‘learned a lot’. That’s one way of describing it I
suppose.
Whichever route you took, I hope it was not too tough
and that you enjoyed yourself at least as much as I did.
STOP PRESS: Wow! Excuse me if I sound a bit over
excited, but I’ve just had the last few rider’s totals
in, which when added to the current total gives a
staggering £927 collected in sponsorship! We’ve only
gone and broken our record. Hang on a minute while I sit
down. How did we do that? I know, through hard work on
everyone’s part. To all those who were involved in any
way with the ride, please give yourself a pat on the
back.
Hope to see you all next year – Lawrence Lees

HANDBELLS AT CHRISTMAS
The popular Lyminge Handbell ringers have dusted off
their Christmas music and are already taking bookings
for the festive season. As usual we will be attending
several church services and have already accepted
bookings for the weeks leading up to Christmas Day. We
ring at formal and informal celebrations and are quite
happy to come to your home for a special festive event.
All we need is a large table for our bells, room for up
to 10 ringers and a donation of at least £35.00 for The
Pilgrims Hospice. So if you’d like to hear charming
traditional handbells playing Christmas melodies just
call Ro Edmond on 863201 or Stuart Hunnisett on 862530.
Alternatively you can e-mail Stuart on
stuarthunnisett@hotmail.co.uk
CALLING ALL DRIVERS
Shepway Volunteer Centre urgently needs volunteer car
drivers for its community transport service. The
transport service enables those unable to access public
transport (primarily the elderly or disabled) to meet
important appointments, hospital, doctor, dentist etc or
undertake essential such as visiting someone in
hospital. Volunteer drivers use their own vehicles and
are reimbursed their petrol expenses. The time
commitment can be as little as one journey a month. A
clean driving licence and a caring disposition are all
that are needed.
Do you think you could help? Want to learn more? Please
call Shepway Volunteer Centre on 01303 253339 and speak
to Pauline, Janet or Sue. You really could make a
difference.
AGE CONCERN
We now have an Advice and Information Officer working
at our Day Centre. Her role is to assist older people to
access up to date information and provide practical
support in maximising their income. At the moment Sue is
building a portfolio of helpful leaflets and practical
services available to older people in Shepway. She can
assist with complicated Attendance Allowance forms. This
service is provided confidentially within an office at
the Day Centre in Everist Court or Sue can visit the
housebound in their homes. If you would like to access
this service, pop in to the day centre or ring Sue
Chitty on 01303 863861.
We are now able to provide a document shredding service
for older people. This is in response to clients
concerns regarding identity issues. There have been
incidents of people rifling through peoples refuse to
access personal information, receipts and banking
documents in order to take on their identity. To access
this service you must bring your documents to the Centre
and watch them being shredded.
We are still investigating how many older people would
be interested in receiving dental treatment at our Day
Centre. If there is sufficient demand they may be able
to allocate us a NHS Domiciliary Dentist. We need to
prove this service is needed by the community. If you
would be interested in this service PLEASE LET US know
by ringing 01303 862364
LYMINGE PRE-SCHOOL
We are a friendly, experienced pre-school with
opening hours 9 – 3pm every weekday and operate in term
time.
Our latest OFSTED report, where were given the highest
results, said “the teaching is of high quality, staff
work positively and enthusiastically with all children,
encouraging them to be confident, independent and very
self-assured”. We hold our sessions at the Lyminge
Village Hall, Woodlands Road.
Please feel free to pop in for a visit at any time for a
chat and a coffee! Or telephone Julie on 01303 862634 or
Lynn on 01303 862831 Email address
Lymingepreschool@aol.com We look forward to hearing
from you.
Comments from Lyminge Pre-School regarding the
proposed Village Sports Facilities
The staff and children of Lyminge Pre-School are
delighted with the plans for the proposed sports for the
rear of the village hall.
Why? Because we can use them as part of our educational
programme. How? Well, firstly the fenced 5 aside
football pitch/tennis court will be ideal for the
pre-schoolers to use for various ball games as they will
be enclosed etc.
However it is the proposed cycle track and skate-park
facility that is most exciting. The pre-school children
will be able to use the cycle track on their bikes/trikes
for races, sponsored rides or just general riding – a
good physical activity!
They will also be able to use their bikes/trikes on the
smaller “humps” in the skate-park area – which will be
an unusual and exciting form of co-ordinated physical
activity. Both facilities will be an added attractioon
at sports day too!
And just think, when other young village children/youths
use this facility during our session times, the
pre-school children will be able to watch. Hopefully,
these skaters/BMX bikers will demonstrate their skills
for the pre-school children! This in turn will lead to
all manner of interesting discussions where the children
can describe what they have seen and so improve their
language, social and listening skills.
We all look forward to this whole facility going ahead
and hope that other people will see the positive points
to such an amenity which can after all provide enjoyment
for such a wide age range – even the little ones!
ARE YOU READY TO PARTY???
If you’ve got lots of creative flair, problem-solving
skills and enjoy organising parties or events. Or if,
you’ve got lots of community spirit and would be willing
to give up a few hours a couple of times per year (more
if you can) to help benefit all of your local community.
We want to talk to you!
We are forming a group of volunteers to raise money
for Etchinghill’s Multi-sports Court and sensory nature
Garden. Come along on Thursday, 10th November at 8pm to
5 Ark Cottages, Etchinghill for our first meeting.
We would also be keen to hear from any young people
who would like to gain some PR, fundraising or event
management experience for their College or University
applications. For further information please call
Catherine on 01303 862 421.

and me, so is very exciting.
The library does provide a housebound service to anybody
unable to get to the library. Volunteers collect and
deliver the books every two or three weeks.
The last thing this month is the outside of the library
is to be repaired and painted.
For more information on anything above please the
library on 862180.
Happy reading
Jane
Something I have intended to publish for months are the

CALLING ALL DOG WALKERS
PLEASE could all dog walkers give
consideration to us all and clear up any poop which your
dog deposits on Tayne field. The field is used by
Lyminge Primary School for outdoor activities and for
all children out of school. Outdoor play on fine days
has been stopped due to the amount of dog poop. It is
not only nasty smelly stuff but can seriously damage a
child’s health.
The football season is upon us and Lyminge Primary will
be hosting matches on Tayne field throughout the winter
and spring terms. If visiting players have to endure a
poop filled pitch it creates a very bad picture of
Lyminge as a village.
So, please dog walkers, scoop the poop and encourage
others to do the likewise. Many thanks, a dog walker and
concerned parent
Does anyone have a spare brown lid wheelie bin
which they no longer need? We have recently moved to a
house that does not have a garden refuse bin and the
Council have stopped supplying them. If you have a bin
which you would be happy to pass on we would be very
grateful.
