THE LYMINGE
NEWSLETTER

MAY 2006

Produced by
The Lyminge Association

I think it is time that I publicly thanked Graham Caldow who willingly helps with the newsletter each month and for whose assistance I am very grateful. I would also like to thank Andrew Sillwood, the Webmaster for Lyminge, who keeps the website updated, which not only helps advertise the village but also captures a wider audience for people who once lived in or worked in Lyminge.
May I also respectively ask people to read the notice below regarding payment . I am quite happy to receive copy by email but money must be taken to the Lyminge newsagents or Lyminge Library by the 18th of each month. Our charges are £1.50 per month for charities and £7.50 per month for business adverts. If you wish to pay for one year the charges are £15.00 and £75.00 respectively, therefore you have 12 issues for the price of 10.

Copy deadline for next month's edition is Thursday the 18th May.
Call Jean Howard on 862488 or email in word doc format to jean.howard1@btinternet.com
Money must be received before articles can appear in the newsletter

Paper copy and money can be left at the Lyminge Newsagents or the Lyminge Library
Please make cheques payable to The Lyminge Association

We are holding regular training sessions in all disciplines which offers fantastic value for money and our forthcoming pleasure rides will allow riders and walkers to view some of the finest scenes the Valley has to offer.
We have applied for affiliation to the BHS British Riding Clubs movement and hope to have confirmation of our approval very shortly. If you would like to join us or want to find out more then just contact Rose or Cassy on 01303 863004 or 01303 840062 or why not e mail valleyridingclub@tesco.net
You and Your Horse can be sure of a warm welcome down in the valley!

Where Do I Come From?

Do you want to know more about the people in your old family photos? Are you stuck in the branches of your family tree? Or want to trace your family tree and do not know where to start?
If the answer to these questions is “yes” then why not enrol on a course at Lyminge Library?
“Family History – First Steps” is being run at Lyminge Library by Kent Adult Education Service, commencing Wednesday May 17 2006, from 2.30pm to 4.30pm. The course lasts for eight weeks in total. It is led by Janet Adamson, a tutor specialising in family and local history. The course is aimed at complete beginners and also those seeking to update their knowledge of family history research.
During the course, you will have the opportunity to look at resources such as Census Returns, parish registers, local newspapers and street directories, as well as seeing the resources available on the internet.
For further information please contact Folkestone Library on 01303 850123 or Lyminge Library on 01303 862180.
Places on the course are limited so pre-enrolment is essential. To enrol please contact Kent Adult Education Service on 0845 606 5606.

John Phillips and his family would like to thank the good people of Lyminge who offered their kindness and support after the death of his mother, Grace Phillips, on 28th March at the William Harvey Hospital. Losing a loved one can sometimes be unbearable, but with the friendship and strength of others that surround us, the burden of grief is easier to bear.
God bless you all,
John Phillips

Dog Mess

Yesterday, Thursday 6th of April, I happened to be looking out of my kitchen window in Ethelburga Drive, only to see a Lady dog owner from further down the road allowing her dog to relieve itself in the road. The lady, whom I will not name and shame, but will know who she is, then proceeded to drag the dog up the road with no thought as to cleaning up its mess! Am I correct in thinking that there are laws against this sort of thing? and fines are liable? We have such a beautiful village, with many young children. Dog mess is not only unsightly but also a health hazard. If you are a dog owner, please keep our village clean! Name and Address Supplied.

Public Notices

Are you able to help locate a vehicle that is believed to have been used in crime in the Kingston/Lodge Lees area? The vehicle is a white Ford Transit Bottle Float with a part registration of H??? RAW. If you are able to help please would call the Police on 01304 240055 and quote crime report FZ/2389/06.

It seems that we have European Environmental Control trying to do business in the area again. Must be 12 months since they were last in the area. Please remember the advice is as always - please think carefully before trading with this company. Although a legal trading company it is their methods that leave much to be desired and they seem only to contact elderly and vulnerable people. Please warn your neighbours that they are in the area again. They have already taken banking details from an unsuspecting client. Trading Standards have been made aware that they are in our area.

Several people have complained about the parking situation that has/is developing in Lyminge since Shepway District Council has decided to charge and repaint yellow lines. What do you think? Will it effect your decision to use local shops and businesses? Write in to share your opinions.

Welcome to the Cricket Season
by Katie Guy

Remember the pride and excitement experienced by us when the Ashes were won and brought home to our country after years of effort and diligence? It was a wonderful happening for all of us.
These members of England’s cricket team began in most cases with practice on the local cricket greens. We are fortunate in having on our doorstep such a village green in Sibton Park. It is well equipped and a lovely place to relax in.
Already this cricket season, there has been a great deal of activity in the area. No worthwhile event can flourish without willing hearts and hands. Today you will see all the familiar faces of families who have worked so hard in the past, ensuring that the refreshment corner is kept in good shape. The club would be pleased to welcome anyone who is interested in the game, or just contented to enjoy a cuppa with players and friends in Sibton Park cricket ground, surely one of the loveliest in all Kent.

Your Letters

Dear Editor: RE: CHANGE OF USE AGRICULTURAL GROUND AT SIBTON PARK CRICKET CLUB
In response to the comments in the April 2006 Newsletter while appreciating the minimal risk to walkers, surely by keeping an eye on what is happening around them they can reduce even further the possibility of a cricket ball causing them injury.
What can be more pleasurable than taking a walk and being able to youngsters participating in a wonderful sport on a beautiful sunny day?
Surely as a village we should be encouraging the cricket club to expand its facilities giving opportunity for current and future generations to enjoy the sport. Julian Glenister

RAY HILL – YOUR LOCAL MILKMAN
Ray will be retiring at the end of July. For the last 20 years he has been your loyal milkman through all weathers. Anyone wishing to show their appreciation of the service he has provided can leave any contributions with Bert Lewis at 3 Ethelburga Drive or, for those at Etchinghill, contributions can be left with me Jean Howard at Aurora, Westfield Lane and I will pass them to Bert.

ETCHINGHILL W.I.
Since our last meeting seventeen of our members attended the Annual Council Meeting at the Leas Cliff Hall, Folkestone. The morning speaker was the Rt. Hon. Ann Widdecombe M.P. and what a brilliant speaker, she certainly kept us all glued to our seats. After lunch we were entertained by Miss Dorothy Gray, whose humourous monologue about the W.I. had some of us crying with laughter.
We always welcome visitors or any prospective members to our meetings which are held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at Etchinghill Village Hall starting at 2.30pm. Please call Joy, our President on 862538 or Dottie, our Secretary on 862141 for further information.
The winner of the competition was Joy Bartley, with Barbara Syrett, 2nd and Evelyn Holt 3rd.

LYMINGE GARDENERS SOCIETY
The editor apologizes for omitting the Lyminge Gardeners news in the April issue, however, due to an oversight, the visit to Thompsons Nurseries had to be cancelled at very short notice.
The next meeting on 16th May is a visit to Windy Ridge, Victory Road, St Margarets at Cliffe, Dover. Mr & Mrs Ryder are members of the National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens. The cost for the evening will be £2 and refreshments will be available.
If a lift is required please be at the Library car park at 5.45pm or at the end of Collingwood Road, St Margarets by 6.30pm

Does anyone remember the Thompson family
who lived in Lyminge from the 70s until a couple of years ago?
I am looking to urgently contact either Angela and Trevor (last known address 3 Woodland Cottages) or Michael, or Steven (last known address Julian Road, Folkestone) or Mandy (last known address Ethelburt Road, Folkestone) . I lost contact with them all about 2 years ago when they all moved and I moved to France and would desperately like to know their whereabouts or any news good or bad and resume contact.
Anyone that has any information please contact me on maztalksfrench@yahoo.co.uk
Thank you Marianne Ironside

Lyminge Dramatic Society – Alice in Wonderland
Plans are under way for what promises to be a really special production of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland to be staged w/c 20th November in Lyminge Village Hall - note the date in your diary now as this production will be one not to be missed!
Set design and set building play a vital role in the staging of our productions. We are keen to strengthen this part of the Society by asking for interested people to contact us with a view to joining the Society and playing an active part in these roles. Fancy yourself as an artist designing the scenery we paint onto our sets or alternatively perhaps you enjoy the set construction side? You’d be part of a friendly team who would have the satisfaction of producing sets which are widely admired. Ring Brian on 863201 or Stuart on 862530. People will be interested to know that the income from the Saltwood performance of the Summer Variety show in 2005 was donated to The Pilgrims Hospice. A total of £636.37 was donated.

LYMINGE JUDO CLUB
Lyminge Judo Club has vacancies for anyone over the age of 6 years. We would particularly like more teenagers & young adults – an opportunity to learn self-defence skills and improve fitness. Why not come and visit us on a Monday evening at Lyminge Village Hall. Time/age related groups from 6.15pm to 9.00pm. Next meeting Monday 24th April.

ETCHINGHILL RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION
The following planning applications have been made to Shepway District Council.
Application YO6/0237/SH regarding the construction of a temporary coach and car park interchange area with toilets/rest room, security cabin and customer shelters at the former Eurotunnel site at Beachborough roundabout (there is a green sign on the gate opposite advocating 'no' to the application). It is apparently a temporary application - the current 'interchange' area by Eurotunnel's customer services centre will no longer be available and the proposed motorway services area at junction 11 will not come into being until 2008/9. 'Temporary' being at least 3 years!
Application YO6/0375/SH is for a detached 1 ½ storey building to be constructed in the garden of Highbank, Westfield Lane. The existing and new house would have very little garden, there would be another access to a garage from Westfield Lane, the housing density would be greater than locally and should the application be approved it would cause huge disruption in Westfield Lane during construction. Application YO6/0397/SH is to cut down 1 willow, 2 ash, 2 sycamore and all the cyprus trees at Roman House, Canterbury Road to allow the construction of a new fence. Judith and I have not heard of Roman House before, so can only assume it is the new house that has been built behind the two converted barns at Ridgehill. We both plan to go and have a look .
If you would like to object to anything, please write to SDC quoting the application number.

AGE CONCERN ELHAM RURAL
I have been in touch with the Primary Care Trust for an update regarding the possibility of providing domiciliary dental clinics from the Everist Court Building.
They have now negotiated new contracts with the Shepway dental practices and are assessing their position. Domiciliary emergencies are on their agenda; however, additional domiciliary dental services need to have additional funding. The PCT are awaiting the outcome of a bid for additional funding. The outcome of this bid should be known in the next few weeks so I’m afraid it’s a case of watch this space.
We have helped many people over 60 to access a bus pass for free travel throughout Kent. If you already hold a concessionary bus pass this already entitles you to free bus travel. A new pass will be sent to you automatically in June. If you do not already have a free bus pass do not miss out.
To get a free bus pass come to the centre bringing with you either your birth certificate, marriage certificate, passport or driving licence that has your date of birth on it. We will provide a form for you to fill out, photocopy your document and send them off to the Council. They will then send your bus pass directly to your home. It’s as easy as that.
Sue Chitty our Advice and Information Officer has in stock a range of up-to-date fact sheets on a range of subjects provided by Age Concern England.
