The Royal British Legion
Elham Valley Branch
We have some wonderful news - this year's Poppy Appeal raised £4,676 for the Branch. This is a record and entirely due to your kindness and hard work in raising so much money. I realise some of you may not be members of The Royal British Legion but nevertheless your help is never forgotten. Kind Regards John Vinnicombe, Chairman and Poppy Organiser, Elham Valley Branch.

What a Difference
What a fantastic difference the new ceiling sound proofing system has made to Etchinghill Village Hall! Our Toddlers can enjoy their playtime whilst our mums and dads can actually hear themselves swapping stories and our babies can chill in a quieter zone! Thank you Village Hall Committee for funding this. Etchinghill Toddler, Baby & Parent Group

Lyminge Library News
by Jane Pace
The library is looking very smart outside now, the back just needs to be finished.
The computer taster session again went very well, possibly another towards the end of the year.
The Caterpillar Music Morning at Baby and Toddler Rhyme Time was lovely and noisy, with nine children and their mums dancing to I Am A Music Man and the Hokey Cokey. It's back to me now, so come along 9.30 Thursday mornings in term time (dads and grannies too).
The reading group is going really well with mixed views on the books so far, which makes it very interesting. This month we are reading Anne Tyler - 'A Patchwork Planet.' Next month is 'Mill On The Floss' by George Elliott. Try your hand at Calligraphy afternoon is being held at the library on Saturday 4 March 2.00 - 4.00 free, names to the library please.

Paul Gordon Running London Marathon
Paul Gordon from Etchinghill is getting ready for one of the biggest challenges of his life by running The Flora London Marathon for the national charity, The Stroke Association.
Running for the Stroke Association Paul will be helping to raise money towards combating strokes in people of all ages. Every five minutes someone in the UK has a stroke and a stroke is the third biggest killer and the leading cause of severe disability in the UK.
Unacceptable inadequacies in stroke care and research exist. For every £50 spent on cancer research and £20 on heart disease research, only £1 is spent on stroke research. Paul hopes to raise over £2,500 for this charity.
The money Paul raises from the London Flora Marathon will go directly to the charity. The Stroke Association is the only national charity solely concerned with combating stokes in people of all ages.
It funds research into prevention, treatment and better methods of rehabilitation, and helps stroke patients and their families directly through its community services. These include dysphasia support, family support, information services and welfare grants. It also campaigns, educates and informs to increase knowledge of stroke at all levels of society & they act as voice for everyone affected.
For more info, visit www.stroke.org.uk or contact 0845 3033100. If you'd like to donate, visit Paul's webpage www.justgiving.com/paulgordon  or tel 07958 209201

Online Lyminge Recreational Area
by Adam Scott
I'm on the Lyminge Youth Action committee and I'd like to mention the Lyminge Online forums. This is a great place for people to put across their views anonymously and for us who actually know the facts to answer the questions. I have started a poll and topic in the Forums under "General Chat". It is called "LYMINGE RECREATIONAL AREA" it already has 80 views. http://www.lyminge.org.uk/forums/

Lyminge Babies & Toddlers Group
by Linda Howard
I first went to Lyminge Babies and Toddlers Group last summer. Like all newcomers I was very apprehensive and it took a bit of courage to walk through the door that first time. I needn't have worried. I was surprised at how friendly the mums were and how relaxed it all was. Soon I really looked forward to going each Tuesday and now as I've made new friends there, if I'm unable to go I really miss it. It gives me that hour or so away from the chores where I can have some welcome adult conversation and enjoy a hot cuppa while knowing that my son is safe, occupied and happy playing.
I would best describe it as a small friendly group which provides valuable time for little ones to play, have fun and socialise with other children. There is plenty of space for them to run around and let off steam. The group is very well run by Yvonne, Jan and Abbi and they welcome all parents and carers of young children.
I really recommend the group to anyone who wants to meet up with other parents/carers locally. You can come along any Tuesday or call Yvonne on 01303 862765 for more information. The group runs term time only in the rear room of the Methodist Church Hall (opposite Lyminge Primary School), from 9.30 - 11.30 am.

Elham Valley Lions
Annual Sponsored Walk - Sunday 9 April
Make a note in your diary of our sponsored walk in aid of local primary schools, starting from the King's Arms Elham at 10 a.m. Sunday 9 April.
We have invited all local primary schools to be involved and Elham and Lyminge are already on board. You may nominate a specific school or your sponsorship will be apportioned over the schools taking part.
So do come along and enjoy a tramp though the delightful countyside around Elham. The route will be mainly on footpaths and small roads. It will only be about 8 miles, but if this is too much for some of you, a shortened route can be chosen. There will be a prize for the individual or dog with the most sponsorship.
For more details or a sponsorship form, please contact any EVL member or call Ken Staff on 01303 238041.

AGE CONCERN ELHAM RURAL

We will be holding a Spring Fair at the Centre on Saturday 18th March between 10am and Mid-day. NOT Saturday 4th March as stated in the previous newsletter. Stalls will include bric-a-brac, arts & crafts, refreshments and cakes, books, raffles and a tombola. Please come along and support us. If you are able to make any donations for the sale we would be very grateful.
Age Concern Elham, has asked that we clarify situations when any of our employees might call to the homes of residents in our area. There have been incidents of distraction burglary in other areas of the country where people posing as Age Concern employees have gained access to people’s homes and robbed them.
Employees of Age Concern Elham Rural would NEVER come to a resident’s home without being invited. The managers of the organisation would have arranged with the resident an appointment time giving the name of the person who would be calling. All our staff have Identity badges with their photos on and the contact details of our organisation. If you are expecting a visit by a named employee but have any doubts about their authenticity you should ring the Day Centre for clarification. Ask the person to hand over the ID card whilst you phone and check the details. Ensure that you shut and lock the door leaving the person outside to wait for you. A genuine Age Concern employee will be happy to wait and delighted that you are so safety conscious. If you are still not satisfied send them away. If you are not expecting a visit assume that they are not employees and refuse entry.
We would very rarely arrange for our volunteers to call at resident’s homes, again such a visit would only be arranged through an appointment. Volunteers also have ID badges but with no photograph. They each have a unique identity number, which corresponds, to their file. Again if you are in any doubt about their authenticity you should follow the same procedure as for our employees.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

Recently in Wingham a robbery took place whereby the handbag of a lady who was standing at a bus stop, was stolen by a passing vehicle. This is the first kind of robbery we have had using this action. In the past in Folkestone we have had vehicles pull up to people and the occupant will ask for directions and then say they cannot hear what is being said. When ladies then take a step closer their handbag has been snatched. Please be aware of this type of crime. We need to be mindful of the whereabouts of a bag at all times and to make sure you do not go out with more money than you anticipate spending. Never take your jewellery out of the house believing that it is safer in your handbag.
On Saturday 7th January three distraction burglaries took place within Shepway between 1245hrs and 1430hrs. Two of these took place in Canterbury Road Densole and Hawkinge. These were at approx 1300hrs. A male described as 30 – 40yrs, approx 6’ tall and wearing a flat cloth cap and fawn waist length jacket went to two different properties and said that he was mending perimeter fencing and that the occupant had to pay half. He entered properties without being invited. Money was stolen from one property.
The third crime took place at approx 1400hrs at a property in Main Road, Sellindge where he walked straight into a property and approached the householder who was resting. His story here was that he had to cut down trees and the householder had to bear half the cost. He stole a wallet from this property.
Please be very cautionary of anyone calling at your property. If work were to be done you would have been given written notice. Please also remember that if you are intending to have a snooze please make sure your doors are locked.

PARISH COUNCIL SPONSOR IMPROVEMENTS

Lyminge Parish Council have agreed a programme of improvements for the coming financial year whilst, holding the precept at the same level for over 4 years. Campaigns to improve road safety are finally becoming reality, using and acting upon the Parish Plan Survey information. Whilst working within our small annual budget we have agreed a plan of spending to help meet the wishes of residents and Councillors alike. Detailed later are our road safety improvements which we felt were a absolute priority whilst some other smaller but important wishes will be addressed this year.

NOTICE BOARDS - Residents expressed a wish to see more information display within the Parish. New Oak notice boards will be provided which will be available for all groups to use whilst also enhancing the appearance of our villages.

IMPROVING ACCESS OF PLAY EQUIPMENT Well Field swings etc are not accessible during the whole Autumn/Winter period. Due to the natural flooding of this wetland meadow it has been agreed that we will investigate moving this facility to a dryer area in Tayne Field.

NATURE RESERVE The PC is investigating designating and developing Well Field as a Nature, picnic and educational area to encourage learning and enhance the area for children and adults alike.

DOG BINS The PC is also investigating providing these much requested facilities but this will depend upon Shepway's ability and agreement to empty these bins.

IMPROVING VILLAGE LIFE

LEISURE FACILITIES ARE GO !!!!!

The Parish Council welcomed the news that planning permission has been granted for the new leisure facilities located on Jubilee Filed. The whole Council agreed that this new and exciting project will provide a valuable and much needed area for all residents to enjoy.

The Parish Council are committed to working with the community to provide a better environment for us all to enjoy. We have encouraged Lyminge Youth Action to involve young people in the development of this scheme and we understand that negotiations have begun to involve the Local Primary School.

It is hoped that young people will help to plant the native hedgerow and specimen trees providing educational value and just good fun. If you would like to find out how you could help please leave your details at the Library and LYA Committee a member will contact you.

Special points of interest:

  • Your Pariah Council supports community projects.

  • We work to enhance village life

  • We lhave a vacancies for Parish Councillors in Rhodes Minnis, Lyminge & Etchinghill.

  • We have not increased our precept for 2006/2007..

  • Without voluntary-work by your Councillors improvements cannot happen.

ROAD SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS FOR LYMINGE

Lyminge Parish Council have been campaigning for improvements in road safety for many years. The PC supported the footpath across the golf course linking Etchinghill and Lyminge but had grave concerns over the dangerous lack of footpath outside Broadstreet House Lyminge. Councillors were so concerned that this is an accident waiting to happen with parents and children walking to school along this route that we lobbied Kent County Council to resolve this danger. Unfortunately KCC due to budget constraints are unable to fund this footpath. Lyminge Parish Council feel so strongly about this danger that we have decided to use some of our reserves to fund this footpath and costings are currently being ascertained.

Also approved and due to commence immediately are the gateway and zebra crossing at the south End of Lyminge village. Many years of campaigning have resulted in KCC funding these two much needed road safety improvements. With the footpath this will provide a complete safe link between the two communities of Lyminge and Etchinghill. Access will be improved also for residents of Lyminge and Etchinghill to all village facilities including Age Concern, the Doctors Surgery, Village Halls, Methodist and Parish Churches, Leisure Facilities, Golf Course and the School. A sample survey was conducted to ascertain the viability of a crossing at the commercial end of Lyminge but residents and businesses directly effected did raise both valid objections and support. A sub committee of the PC has been established to look at road safety and parking issues within the Parish using Parish Plan findings and we will report on their findings in the future

MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE
BECOME A PARISH COUNCILLOR

As you have read in this and previous newsletters your Parish Council is pro-active and committed to making a difference. It may take time but we can encourage, support or take direct action in enhancing the lives and environment of the whole Parish. We have a number of vacancies on the Parish Council and would welcome residents who are keen to develop the WHOLE Parish not just a single issue. Yes you do have to give up some free time but when something you believe in becomes reality you can't beat that feeling of achievement. Come along to our next meeting or give us a call, we don't bite (well only sometimes) for an informal chat. Contact either Derrick, Glenn or Patsy on the numbers below. Make a difference today!
