Do you know where your teenage children are & what they are doing?

Some youngsters from Lyminge and Etchinghill are finding Etchinghill Cricket Ground to be a good place to meet up. That in itself is fine. Youngsters would be welcome to use the benches there as long as they respected the property and environment. Unfortunately they do not! Smashed bottles (some of which obviously contained alcohol), litter of various descriptions, evidence of items being burnt - including on one of the tables, churned up grass caused by cycles and, worst of all, vomit strewn across one of the tables constitute the debris which club members have to clear up on a regular basis. The local policeman and warden know of this problem. They also know who most of the youngsters are. If your youngster is one of the culprits, please try to make them more aware of their social responsibilities. This item has been submitted by the Etchinghill Residents' Association Wendy Preston

Gates for Etchinghill

I am delighted to see that Lyminge has followed Barham in having gates installed at both ends of their SOmph controlled area. The residents of Etchinghill require the same. It is very apparent that the boy and girl racers, and older drivers, are blatantly ignoring the 30mph signs in Etchinghill. Though not an excuse for drivers ti speed, the signs are often partially obscured by foliage. This needs to be addressed by the Highways Agency. More obvious and robust signs and aates are needed. Colin Manvell

Lyminge Shops feel the Cost of the Car Park
Graham Caldow

Parking meters have recently been installed in the car park at Lyminge by Shepway District Council. One of the reasons for the introduction of these meters is to solve the problem of people blocking the car park all day instead of for short stays to do local business, such as visit the Post Office, nip across to the Hardware Store or fill a prescription. But it seems that the local shops are feeling the cost of this new imitative. Most report takings are down.

A walk along Station and Canterbury Roads reveals the thoughts of our shopkeepers. Jas Thind, the pharmacist, like many of the shops in Lyminge, has helped gather a petition against the meters installed in the car park. Jas requested one of our local ward councillors, one of the key initiators for the introduction of parking meters, Cllr Monk, to add his signature when he visited the chemist. Cllr Monk apparently refused, saying he was in favour of the meters because they would unclog the car park. Jas freely acknowledged a problem but suggested this parking meter solution was "a sledge hammer to crack a walnut." He went on to say, "although I can't give precise figures because of seasonal fluctuation in scripts, anecdotally my takings seem to be down."

Sally Burr, from the Coffee Shop, says she is angry, 'People are not parking as a point of principle, which is fair enough, but at the same time by not parking there this doesn't do shops any good.' She went on to suggest that, 'Although it starts off at 20p I bet in a year it will be 80p or a pound.' This point of people refusing to pay was also echoed by Jas Thind, who went on to wonder whether people might use the surrounding roads instead, notably Church Rd. He said, "that could cause another problem in itself because if everyone parks along there it presents a danger to children coming out from school."

Colleen, the Post Mistress, reports that while people have come in to do their regular post office business they tend not to hang around and browse the shop section of the post office and takings are down. She attributes this to people double parking. She believes that once they leave the post office they do not visit other shops unless they need to, and so there is a knock on effect of other shops takings being down. She also thinks that her business suffers for the same reason; people need to go to another shop but don't stop at the shop section of the Post Office unless they need to.

Sylvia Norris, from the Hardware Shop, feels Shepway District Council have let her down. If people can't park on the road they don't stop because they are unwilling to pay for parking. She spends half her day speaking to customers about the parking situation; she hastens to stress she doesn't defend the parking. She reports her "takings are significantly down."

As I was talking with Sylvia, Andrew Garrett, one of her customers, entered her shop. He regards the situation as "self defeating in the sense that it might drive people out of their cars and park on the [yellow] lines, so wardens have to book them." He went on to say that an awkward parking situation would make it undesirable to stop in the car park or anywhere else in Lyminge so people wouldn't stop. They would drive through and use the shops in town, and then only locals will use the shops in Lyminge, which wouldn't be enough to support them.

At the Parish Council AGM last month, Cllr Monk apparently said he would review parking charges in one year if local businesses suffered. He also gave an undertaking not to put any more yellow lines in Lyminge. However, Helen Burnham, manager of Samuel Jacob Hairdressers, argues that, "it will be too late then, because the businesses are already suffering now.' She went on to ask, "how can you keep sustaining losses for a year?"

Perhaps this is a timely reminder to us all. If this parking situation is putting more pressure on our local shops to survive we must make sure we use them now, when they are having difficulties, otherwise we will lose them. Perhaps Cllr Monk and Shepway District Council did not full realise the consequences of their decision, but it is not too late to ask them to reconsider. If you support our local shop keepers and want to put pressure on Shepway District Council to remove the parking meters, please register your concern, even if you have already signed the petition. If you take the time to buy a stamp and go to the post box, the council will be able to see how strongly the feeling is against parking meters in Lyminge. Let us be charitable and think this decision is misguided, nothing else. Helen Burnham seems to sum up well what many feel when she says, "I'm sure he [Cllr Monk] is a very nice man but people have long memories and they won't forget the car park issue next year during the local elections."

Gold Rush in Lyminge
The Rude Mechanicals will be paying their annual visit to Tayne Field on Sunday 23rd July, this year starting slightly earlier at 7.30pm. The show will be The Gold Rush', a new play with music about a group of vaudeville actors who get caught up in the Yukon gold rush of 1897. A mad lust for gold begins as the townsfolk of Skagway Creek sell their possessions, their homes and even their wives to buy what they need to drag their dreams up The Golden Staircase' of the Chilkoot Pass to hell or paradise. The show is full of hilarious vaudeville and spoof cowboy routines, but will break your heart with its pathos. This company of first class actor / musicians was listed in The Times' Top ten outdoor shows for The Fairy Queen last summer & called in The Independent on Sunday:'A fabulously talented group. A delight!' Bring a picnic and wine, your own chair or rug, dress up as cowboys and indians and have a good time. Although the show is aimed at adults many children will enjoy it too.
Tickets can be bought at Lyminge Hardware, or the Central Box Office: 01323-501260. They are priced at £10 for adults, £9 for senior citizens and £5 for anyone in full time education - a good price for actors who work regularly in the West End and major theatres around the country. There's a Family ticket too for £25 (that is, any two adults & school aged children) and a large group rate (£1 off per ticket for groups of 10 or more). Don't miss it!

Lyminqe Dramatic Society - Alice in Wonderland

Plans are under way for what promises to be a really special production of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland to be staged w/c 20th November in Lyminge Village Hall - note the date in your diary now as this production will be one not to be missed!
Set design and set building play a vital role in the staging of our productions. We are keen to strengthen this part of the Society by asking for interested people to contact us with a view to joining the Society and playing an active part in these roles. Fancy yourself as an artist designing the scenery we paint onto our sets or alternatively perhaps you enjoy the set construction side? You'd be part of a friendly team who would have the satisfaction of producing sets which are widely admired. Ring Brian on 863201 or Stuart on 862530.
The Youth Drama Club, run by Amanda Rynston of Little Acorns Performing Arts, has been very successful and the Dramatic Society has been pleased to provide sponsorship for it. In May the club entered the Drama Festival at the Sittingbourne Community College and various other activities are planned to supplement the weekly sessions at Lyminge Methodist Hall. New members are actively encouraged and people should ring Amanda on 01303-862049

ETCHINGHILL RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

  • A number of folk expressed concern regarding an almost brand new estate car, parked in the Village Hall car park for over a week (and still there at the time of "going to press"., this was reported to our Community Warden who came round with a police officer, took details, etc., and put a "Police Aware" sticker on it - it seems it is a hired car so presumably enquiries are being pursued with the rental company., but it goes to prove... if you are concerned, report it - you never know, even in our quiet village, if there may be something suspicious.
  • Flooding - Meriden Park... some of the residents of Meriden Park have suffered significant flooding and damage to property from water during heavy rain running off the field behind their houses. This issue had already been taken up with the M.O.D. and now we have "raised the ante!".. The M.O.D., Jones Homes and Shepway Council have all been invited by Michael Howard, our M.P., to meet "round the table" to sort the problem - we are grateful to our busy M.P. for being so willing to become involved and acting promptly.
  • Next meeting of the Etchinghill Residents Association is on Wednesday 21st June at 16, St Mary's Drive.. if there are any issues of concern to you, please let us know - can't promise miracles, but we can at least try!

RHODES MINNIS EVENING CIRCLE

We had our usual fish and chip supper following our Annual General Meeting on the 17th May 2006. We have had a very successful year with a great variety of speakers.
After three years in the position of Chairperson, Eileen Sless stepped down and the Circle is pleased to welcome Marion Hoare in her place.
The Annual Competition Cup was won by Molly Walker, with Pearl Furminger and Paula Peers as very close runners up.
For 2006/07 we have a very interesting programme planned. The committee have decided that all meetings will be Open Meetings when visitors are made welcome without being expected to join the Circle after two attendances at the meetings, however, it is more economical to join, the membership fees are only £10.00 that is less than £1 per meeting. Not bad for a night out, is it?
Sue Scrivens will be our speaker at the next meeting on the 21st June, Sue will be telling her exciting story of | how she discovered an unknown strain of foxglove in her garden and of her journey from the discovery to a | major company being the suppliers of the variety. A must for all keen gardeners.
Please contact Marion Hoare on 01303 862913 for further details or any questions you may have.
A very warm welcome is made to all visitors and members alike.

SHEPWAY PARKING POLICY
DAMAGES THE RURAL COMMUNITY

WHAT A SHAMBLES!! EMPTY CAR PARK, EMPTY SHOPS, EMPTY LIBRARY, EMPTY PARKING METERS, and above all EMPTY HEADS!!

We reported in our April edition that "charging for parking in a rural village setting where local service providers struggle to survive is a thoughtless action without consideration". How right we were. When will the District Council listen to the people it is supposed to serve?. The Parish Council has insisted that for Shepway District Council to solve their budget difficulties penalising an already under provided for rural community was and is utter madness and is damaging the local community. Lyminge shops, businesses and Library provide a valuable service for a wide number of people from our Parish and rural communities. We are not treated on an equal basis with communities in Shepways towns and large population centres so WHY are we subjected to this blanket policy?

Parish Councillors and some local business owners asked our District Councillors these questions but met with little sympathy and comments such as "it's only 20p". It may only be 20p but the effect has been devastating for local business and community services. The big question is also, if it is "only 20p" how can this possibly make a valued contribution to Shepways budget difficulties especially when you consider how much it must cost to send parking attendants from Folkestone to Lyminge 3 times a day? The policy is bad for Lyminge, bad for the rural economy, bad for shepway,s income and bad for the whole community.

A WORD OF WARNING!

Door Knockers have been found to be working the Elham Valley recently offering to buy valuables, from broken watches to garden tools. They operate putting fliers through doors and say they will be in the area during that week and to phone for a home visit.

Although this is not illegal, if they are registered under the Kent Act, I would be very cautious to invite someone unknown into your house to look at your valuables.

My advice would be to take your valuables to a known dealer if vou want to sell them. A door Knocker who was not registered was recently asked to leave the area but he may return. If you are unsure or receive a flier please do not hesitate to contact me.

Regards—Gary Harrison your KCC Community Warden. Telephone:-07977982185

PARKING CHARGES-THE RESULTS

The Parish Council fully support the campaign against the Car Park charges in Lyminge. Councillors attended the recent demonstration in the Car Park and have written again to the District Council demanding action.

The drop in people using the businesses and Public Library is drastic and unsustainable. The Coffee Shop is down on takings by some 40% and as a small business operating on a weekly takings basis is struggling to survive. The Hardware store has at least a 35% drop in customers and The Library has reported a massive 50% drop in people through their doors. Take note Shepway District Council you are in danger of driving businesses and services out of business!. The combination of re-instating the single yellow lines in Canterbury Road (against protests from the Parish Council) and the introduction of Car Park Charges are having a devastating effect on the whole community. The Parish Council would prefer to see no charges but have again suggested a compromise, in the form of no charge for the first 2 hours. This would allow people to use the majority of businesses and the Library whilst deterring all day parking. Over 1600 have signed the petition against the charges. This constitutes a massive vote against these ill thought out charges and should dictate a positive response from our Councillors and Shepway District. The original purpose of securing finances for the District have not and will not be met, Cllr David Monk said at the Parish Council Annual Meeting that" of course the Council would look aging at the charges if it was having an adverse effect on businesses" It is and therefore we hope he will be true to his word and in the next edition we can report the result.
