Questions and Answers
During the month I have been
offered several photographs to show
here so I have decided that there
will be little writing and I will
let the pictures do the talking.
 <--
This is a photo of the Honey Buzzard
which visited Zoë Furneaux’s garden
to the west of Dover recently and
which I wrote about last month. I
was told recently, by Zoë’s mother
Marilyn Norton, that a Buzzard has
been shot near to Hawkinge.
Fortunately it was found still alive
and is being treated by a vet.
This photo --> came from Chris
Laverty and was one of her mother’s
(Barabara Hayesmore). It shows
Station Cottages in the 1930’s with
Chris’ mother at the front of the
group children. Chris’ uncle, Reg,
is on the right. The children appear
to be clothed in dressing up clothes
and may have been due to take part
in a village event.
Finally
here is a picture of the Parish
Church choir sometime in the 1930’s.
Again it comes from Chris Laverty’s
collection. In the photograph is
Miss Collins (the choir mistress
wearing a mortar board) who, by all
accounts I have heard, was a lovely
woman.
This suggests two more questions:
• Q15 What is the history of the
churches in the locality?
• Q16 What is the history of the
church choir and are there any
particular reminiscences?
If you can provide an answer to any
question or want to ask a question
yourself contact me.
Happy New Year,
Alistair Bailey

LYMINGE
SHOWCASE DAY
On Saturday 31st January
2009, the Lyminge
Association is hosting a
showcase day in the Lyminge
Methodist Hall. We will
present over 30 of the 39
clubs, societies and
organisations that thrive in
the parish. These
organisations cater
variously for the youngest
to the most elderly of our
residents.
Toddler
groups, craft clubs,
entertainment activities,
sports, youth groups, local
history meetings, help and
support groups, friendship
and book readings – all
these will be represented.
Even with so
much going on it is
sometimes difficult for
those of us living here to
discover what each
organisation has to offer,
when they meet and what – if
any, commitment is required
by their members. Therefore,
we thought if we bring them
together you will have a
better opportunity to see
what is on offer.
The clubs
and societies will ‘lay-out
their stalls' as it were, so
that you can see what they
do and what joining would
entail. Not all of them will
be able to take on new
members but vacancies will
occur in the future and you
owe it to yourself to find
out what is available.
Additionally
some of the local keep-fit
and musical groups will show
us what they can do in the
Methodist parlour.
So break
into the winter gloom, come
along on Saturday, 31st
January 1:30pm to 4:30pm –
bring the family. Light
refreshments will be
available.
How do you think you are
doing in tracing your family
tree?
Are you
interested in forming a
small group to meet on a
regular basis to overcome
any difficulties in
researching your family
tree?
There are a
few of us who have already
started researching in
different ways but we all
need some extra help to find
the ‘next bit of the
puzzle’.
Together we
can:
o get you started and
compare progress to help
inspire
o give tips on searching
the Internet
o make suggestions on
alternatives when you reach
a ‘dead-end’
o explain how to search
for certificates – perhaps
organise a visit
If this
sounds as if it will help
you, please register your
interest and provide a brief
summary of how much
research, if any, you have
already done. You can do
this at the Lyminge
Historical Society table on:
Saturday
31st January 2009 between
1.30 pm to 4.30 pm at:
The Lyminge Showcase in the
Methodist Hall in Lyminge.
Lyminge Bridge Club
Would you like to
join us at our Monday
morning Bridge club?
We meet in the Bowls club
pavilion from 10 – 12 am.
It is a very friendly club
and players of all ages are
welcome

our charity, the Pilgrims
Hospice. A contribution to

asked for if bookings are at
locations more than 5 miles

Reports from
Representatives on Outside
Bodies
a) Age Concern: A routine
meeting was held on the 17th
November, with the next meeting
to take place on 12th January. A
quiz night will be held on 29th
November at Everist Court. Next
meeting: 12lh January 2009
b) Footpaths: Cllr R. Chubb led
the Parish Walk on 16th November
with 7 walkers. The 2 hr walk
was mainly on roads due to the
fields being wet and followed a
4.5 mile route to Farthing
Common and Skeete before
returning to the post office.
The next walk is on 14th
December leaving the post office
car park at 10am.
c) Lyminge VHMC: Lyminge
Fireworks night was not as well
attended as usual due to damp
weather, but the recent craft
fayre was quite successful. The

commence on 1st December. It is
planned that 8 trees and 60mtrs

suitable. It was noted that an
area of the school grounds was
already allocated for that
purpose, but a volunteer was
required to manage the project.
The Residents Association will
meet on 30th November. A request
has been forwarded to the police
to arrange a speed check. A
large amount of vegetation is
collecting along Westfield Lane.

Additional
Notifications
The Parish Council
would like to thank all the
Volunteers who have assisted with
the Speedwatch Scheme during 2008.
The Scheme has been deemed to be
successful in reducing the incidents
of speeding offences within the
three Parishes that use the
equipment.
Gary Harrison (our
Community Warden) is very keen to
hear from anyone who may be
interested in helping to coach local
youth football teams. If you are
interested in becoming involved
please contact Gary on
gary.harrison@kent.gov.uk or
call him on 07977 982185.
Following the recent
discussions concerning local parking
issues (in particular the necessity
for access for emergency services
vehicles), the Council is holding a
Public Consultation meeting to
discuss possible solutions. The
meeting will take place at 7.30pm on
Wednesday 28th January at Lyminge
Methodist Parlour. The meeting is
open to all parishioners and we look
forward to seeing you there.
Sadly and with
deep regret, the Council must report
that Cllr Ann Baldock passed away on
Sunday 7th December. Ann was a
well-respected member of the
Council, participating actively in
all matters, standing as Chairman
and assisting the Council with her
wealth of local knowledge. She will
be greatly missed. The Council
forwards its condolences to her
husband Geoff.
Our thoughts are with him at this
sad time. |
