THE GUILD OF SAINT NICHOLAS, LYMINGE
OPEN LETTER TO ALL COMMUNITY GROUPS AND ORGANISATIONS IN THE PARISH OF LYMINGE

Over the past three years Saint Nicholas' Fair has grown from strength to strength. The fair has 'snowballed' beyond our wildest dreams and has become such an incredibly successful annual event that it has now reached the point where we are faced with a dilemma. To be honest, we are unable to run it on our own any longer. However, as the fair has grown, it has become clear to us that if has become an event which belongs to the whole of the community. So this is the choice we are faced with: a) No longer run the fair as it is and let it dwindle back to the old Christmas church bazaar it had become OR b) make it even bigger and better.
Foolhardy it may seem but we have decided to take the second option and we hope very much that you will be excited by our proposals which are as follows:
1. To run a street market for traders and crafts persons alongside the main fair,
2. To have many more players and circus entertainers, music and dancing, food and drink.
3. To have the main St Nicholas' Fair rejuvenated with each stall being run by a different organisation.
4. To provide the opportunity for each organisation in the main fair to take away what it earns on the day. (Experience has shown that there is a potential to earn up to £500 per pitch!)
We have already prepared a written constitution, renamed ourselves, and split the organisational tasks into smaller, more manageable elements. All we need now is the commitment of the many and varied groups and organisations throughout the parish to participate in this amazing new event.
On the 7th of March we shall be having an open meeting at the Parish Church at 7.30 p.m. for members from all community groups from the very young to the not quite so young. We do hope that representatives from every group could come and join us in this new enterprise and also hope that it will prove to be the beginning of something very special that belongs to all of us! We will be revealing some of the plans to make the Fair a reality - be prepared to be surprised!
Please join us!

Plans for Future Burials
in the Parish Churchyard

In 2004 the Parochial Church Council (PCC) set in train a process to expand the present churchyard into the adjacent upper field as the spaces left for burial were reducing.
Having asked permission of the Diocese of Canterbury, the PCC was informed that an archaeological evaluation of the site would be necessary as the site is 'significant'. Permission would only be granted if no archaeological items were found.
The archaeological evaluation took place in May 2005 conducted by Canterbury Archaeological Trust over several weeks. Their findings were indeed 'significant' as the site of the former Nunnery, which would have existed alongside the Abbey, was found. Before the upper field can be used as a burial ground, a full archaeological survey is required, and a report needs to be written, and this could take many years. As a result of this, it will not be possible to continue with burials in the existing churchyard for much longer.
After many visits from the Diocese of Canterbury and much discussion within the PCC, plans are being drawn up to use the remaining space to best advantage. This means that a Garden of Remembrance will be created so that once a person has been cremated, their ashes can be buried and a memorial stone laid to remember them. It also means that quite soon the last of the spaces allocated for burials will be used up.
The PCC has written to the Parish Council to initiate discussions about the proposed plans. An open meeting is to be held where the plans can be explained in more detail, and the proposals discussed. The meeting will be chaired jointly by the Parish Council and the PCC.
If you want to hear more about the plans, please come along on Monday 20th March at 7.30pm to the church. Transport can be provided by phoning the church office on 862345. The plans will be available in the Library shortly and will also be displayed in the church.

Your Letters

Jean and I have a very loose editorial policy: we print whatever is submitted to us provided it is not insulting, abusive or designed to cause offence. None of the letters received this month fell in to any of these categories. However, due to reasons of space, I could not print letters in full this month and have had to hold an item on a non-related issue until next month. This issue of a Skate Park facility is an important one to our community and one that should be, in part, debated in the pages of this Newsletter - what is the point of having a Newsletter if not! But the one thing this Newsletter should not be is a forum for attacks on individuals in which issues or events are raised of which the vast majority of the Newsletter readers have little or no knowledge. Only debatable facts related to the issue built around proper arguments can be printed in this limited space. Who said what to whom in a committee meeting has a place but, because neither I nor the majority readers of this Newsletter are present to verify comments made, it seems inappropriate to include them here as they are often personal. I would like to emphasise that this Newsletter welcomes readers' views on this and all subjects. Just remember we all have to live near each other.
                     Graham Caldow

Dear Editor: For the entertainment of the rest of the readers, I would like to respond to Glen Floyd's and Jenny Tomlinson's letters in last month's newsletter. Firstly to comment on Jenny's points. She is unwise to quote the Parish Plan results as justification for the proposed development, the "overwhelming" response that she notes was only 20 votes for a skateboard/rollerblade facility (and there were 15 votes for a swimming pool!). There are merits to some of the parts of the proposal, but that doesn't mean that the proposal is a good one, for instance, the cycle track is a great idea, but it would be better placed on Tayne Filed where there is plenty of space.
I'm not sure what Jenny means by a divided community, members of the Village Hall Committee help the Church at its fete and fundraising events every year (coconut shy, and gazebos etc) - we are always willing to promote village life. The Village Hall Fundraising Committee have offered to fundraise for the venture (if the location of the skatepark facility were to be placed anywhere other than at the back of the Village Hall), but Glen Floyd told us in no uncertain terms that he neither wanted nor needed our help!
To spell out again the points that I made in the December newsletter, due to the hardwork of the fundraising committee and our army of helpers and to the support and generosity of the public, we raise over £5,000 each year. What causes the field to be unavailable to the Hall is immaterial - it could be the best development in the world, or it could be this proposal. Fact: without that money the Hall will quickly close. It is my assertion that the proposed development will prevent us from holding those events, so therefore the hall will close.
Jubilee Field belongs to the Parish Council, they can agree whatever they want for its use, but if the Village Hall closes because of it, they will have to remember that it was their decision.
Steve Huntley
Chairman,
Lyminge Village Hall Management Committee
Dear Editor: The Parish Plan results as I understand, does not specify the proposed Leisure facilities were a mandatory requirement to be provided at Jubilee Field. The Plan suggested the Skate Park and Tennis Court would be advantageous to the village community, and there is no argument against this, it is just a question of the preferred location.
Glen Floyd states the Police and the Kent Community Warden fully supported the Planning Application. I believe they supported the Application with regard to Crime Prevention, and Vandalism on the proposed site. I suggest the same response would have been forthcoming if acceptable alternative sites had been proposed.
He states the full Parish Council are fully supporting this scheme. My understanding is the decision was carried by 4 votes to 1. It does not surprise me Mr Floyd has the support of his colleagues on the Parish Council (Mr Floyd is the Treasurer) because if the Plans are accepted the Council will benefit significantly. The Planning Application states extensive hedging will be planted around the perimeter of Jubilee Field to redefine the boundary and replace fencing which is in disrepair. I suggest this is the responsibility of the Parish Council who already receive substantial funding from Shepway D.C. to carry out this work. They should not have to rely on other sources of public funding, some of which will be in the form of Grant Aid from K.C.C. A double sum of Public money for one job required by the Parish Council.
Again I am not surprised the Play Group is supporting Mr Floyd's Planning Application. The Play Group is a fee paying, profit making organisation, run by two ladies who are also Parish Council members. The Group will benefit because it will have an extensive children's play area adjoining their current rented premises completely free of charge. This no doubt will enhance their current situation which could attract additional business, and perhaps additional fees. Would this facility be better sited at Tayne Field where it would attract greater number of children as they exit the Primary School and is more central to the community.
I do not consider the Proposed Planning Application is either exciting, innovative, or provides high quality leisure facilities, and would be prepared to debate these claims with Mr Floyd if he gives me the opportunity. His comments on the mentality of the residents of Woodland Rd is grossly offensive to reasonable minded people living there. I question his attitude if he had witnessed youths urinating against his garden fence as I have done on mine. There are no public toilets included in his Planning Application thus accentuating the problems I and others residents of Woodland Rd have experienced.

The LYMINGE ASSOCIATION is resurrecting the LYMINGE ‘FUN’ RUN on SATURDAY 11TH MARCH. Unfortunately due to Health & Safety issues, it has become far too costly to run it in its previous format. We are therefore organising 2 RUNS. The main run as a MULTI-TERRAIN ‘FUN’ RUN of approximately 7 MILES and a JUNIOR RUN of approximately 1 MILE.
We are extremely grateful for the generous advice and guidance given by the Folkestone Running Club who hopes we will make this an annual event. The event is going to be much larger than previous fun runs and because of this we would appreciate much more voluntary help from local people. The money raised from the fun run goes towards projects benefiting the clubs & organisations within Lyminge Village. Whatever time you can spare from 10am on the day would be put to good use & will benefit the community. The majority of help will be in marshalling the routes. For further information please contact Jean Howard on 01303 862488, or click here for an entry form to print.

meeting of the year was very well attended. We look forward to a happy and successful time ahead.
The first social event will be our Christmas/New Year lunch at Elham in late January. We have invited the husbands of two of our stalwart members, Ann Gibbons and Joan Morris who sadly died last year, to join us.
Several ideas have been discussed for outings later in the year. Many members would prefer a half-day outing and this will be borne in mind. After the business was dealt with and 5 members presented with birthday posies we settled down to hear Mr John Pearce give his talk called ‘ Flowers for Emma’. This was a true story about his wife’s Grandmother. An interesting and romantic tale beginning before the First World War, well documented and illustrated.
The competition for a ‘Winter Flower arrangement ’ was won by Jean Howard with Daphne Melrose second.
Our next meeting is on Tuesday 21st February starting at 2.30pm when our speaker will be Mr C Baldwin whose subject is ‘ Baccy, Brandy and a Hundred Years of Smuggling’
