An Outsider’s Perspective of the Car Park Charge
By Michael Herten

As a visitor to the village for a week at Sibton Park I looked up Lyminge on the net. Several things were of interest to me as a Parish Councillor in Somerset.
You have an excellent Newsletter in which I read of the controversy about parking. A similar thing is proposed in our local town probably because the officers see free parking in this small town as a loss of potential revenue. The cost of collection and enforcement is conveniently ignored, but there is an element of daftness creeping in at all levels of government.
The puny charge of 20p is strange as most people are just popping in for a few things like a prescription. It should be free for the first 45 minutes!
If you are trying to stop all day parking there are a more effective ways like a 3 hour limit etc.
I was surprised by the substantial numbers of cars going through the village not just going to Elham and beyond but also up the Stelling Minnis road. This makes it unpleasant for pedestrians and motorists alike. Making use of the car park more attractive might be beneficial.
However on a more positive note as a visitor I was delighted by:
         1. The friendliness of the local people (an echo of comments in the guest book at Sibton Park).
         2. The amount of enjoyable cricket, at all levels, there is to watch.
         3. The amazing number of excellent eateries there are in the area. This may be the cause of item 1!
I look forward to my next visit to Kent

If you have concerns about how the new parking charges are affecting local traders, you can write to our local Councillor David Monk at Shepway District Council, Civic Centre, Castle Hill Ave, Folkestone, Kent CT20 2QY or Alistair Stewart, Shepway Chief Executive, at the same address or email him at
alistair.stewart@shepway.gov.uk

After three years of questionnaires, roadshows, photographic workshops and the Three Wishes Campaign a Parish Plan for the parish of Lyminge has now been finalised.
A Summary of this Parish Plan has been delivered to all households in the parish. Our full report has been presented to the Parish Council to enable the Council to act upon the wishes and views of the community it represents, and has been warmly received by Shepway District Council, Action for Communities in Rural Kent and the Kent Downs AONB Unit. It is available on the parish plan website www.lymingeparishplan.org.uk for those who would like more information.
The Lyminge Parish Plan Group, which is now disbanding, wishes to thank everyone for their contributions to this project. In particular, thanks are due to Alistair Bailey, James Butcher, Deborah Caldow, Barbara Collins-Newing, Charlie Dodds, Mike Foxon, Paulien Gill, Denise Glenister, Catherine Hughes, Deirdre Macdonald, Lesley Malkin, Julie Murphy, Les Preston, Wendy Preston, Jack Simmons, Mark Thomas, Steve Thomas, Noel Tatt, Colin Walton, Philip Wilson, Hannah Zaidi and all those who have helped us on the way.
The Group is grateful for financial contributions received from The Countryside Agency and Lyminge Parish Council for this project and for administrative help and contributions from The Channel Business Centre, Castle Hill Avenue, Folkestone.
Advice and support was also kindly provided by Action for Communities in Rural Kent (Richard Backhouse and Victoria Lawson), the Kent Downs AONB Unit, Action for Communities in Rural Sussex, Kent Archaeological Society and Shepway District Council.

Elham Valley Lions Club

Enjoy a Golf Day at Sene Valley and help raise funds for charity. Our annual golf day will be held this year on 25th August in aid of the Paula Carr Trust which provides screening and treatment services for Diabetes in East Kent. For just £40 you can enjoy a round of golf with a chance to win prizes and finish up with a three-course meal. Sponsored by Spain Brothers and Co. and other local supporters. For details, call Colin on 01303 862607, or Ken on 0303 238041.

Thanks to all those who supported our Easter-Egg raffles which raised £576. Our charity band concert in June featuring the Railway Swing Band was a sell out and a brilliant success, raising £1,500. There is nothing quite like live music and when there are two dozen musicians together with two singers you can’t beat it. Look out for next year’s date!

Thanks also to all those who supported our sponsored walk for schools in April. As well as funds raised direct by individual schools, we have recently paid £250 to each participating school from the “floating” walkers.

Organic box scheme

I am the delivery point for a scheme run by Ripple Farm Organics in Crundale. Every Thursday boxes of organic vegetables are dropped off at my house here in Lyminge. Over 90% of the vegetables in the boxes are grown at Ripple Farm and they are always vegetables which are in season and locally grown. So not only are they wonderfully fresh and delicious but they also have very few “food miles” involved in their delivery. It’s a wonderful surprise every week to see what is in the box! This week as well as new potatoes, fresh new carrots and green onions there was mixed lettuce, summer cabbage, broad beans, fresh beetroot and tomatoes. If you would like to find out more about this scheme, give me a ring or leave a message and I shall be happy to give you more information.

Pottery News

We enjoyed our July meeting painting pottery provided by Katherine Goody and her daughter from Roseneath Ceramics. The best pottery design was won by Diane Potter, with Val Hughes 2nd, Gillian Taylor 3rd and Eileen Sless 4th. In August we have an outing to Windsor, and we meet again at Rhodes Minnis Village Hall on 20th September when we will have a talk on the Kent Air Ambulance.charity. Visitors are very welcome.

ETCHINGHILL W.I.

Our President, Joy Bartley, chaired the July meeting. Two birthday posies were presented, one of whom was Audrey Kirk, one of our oldest members who rarely misses a meeting.

In June we enjoyed a B.B.Q. in the garden of June Price whose husband and brother-in-law were excellent 'chefs'. A really lovely day and much appreciated.

The speaker in July was Mrs Ward whose subject was 'Over the pond and Down under'. She kept us well amused with her exploits in spite of walking with crutches most of the time and her mimicking of the American and Australia tongue was amazing. The competition for 'A travel tip' was won by Daphne Melrose.

We do not hold a meeting in August but will be going to Leeds Castle on our Annual Summer outing. We will also be having a cream tea at Lathe Barn.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday 19 September at Etchinghill village Hall at 2.30pm. Our speaker will be Mr D'Arcy whose subject will be 'Living with the ghosts of the Tower'. The competition is for a Spooky picture.

We are always pleased to see visitors who are most welcome to come to our meeting. Anyone interested please 'phone Dottie on 862141 or Joy on 862538 or just turn up.

There are a few seats available for our trip to Leeds Castle on 15th August. Please 'phone Stella on 862363

Thank you to everyone who either supported or assisted with the Etchinghill Fete & Craft Show. Money is currently being counted & distributed. But, I would like to mention the generosity of The New Inn who donated over £400, Clydesdale Bank who donated £100 and companies Red Dragon IT Limited and Wolseley Hire Centre who donated services for free. We would not have been able to organise such a successful fete without the calming determination, creativity and, organisation skills of Marie & Phil Reynolds, Hester & Ann Ethell, Katie & Karl Dodd and Margaret Pau. Well done & thank you for your help! Catherine & Simon Rosenberg

Thank you from all the "Yummy Mummies" to Katherine & Hester for co-ordinating the Etchinghill Parent, Baby & Toddler Group for the past year. Please contact Catherine 862 421 for more details.

You could help!
