LYMINGE MULTI-TERRAIN RUN

The Lyminge Association would like to thank Red Dragon for part sponsoring the posters, Haxton’s for sponsoring the runners numbers and The Trophy Shop, Dover for part sponsoring the medals. We would also like to thank all the Marshalls and the lead cyclist , who turned out in awful weather to ensure the safety of the runners. All those who took part thoroughly enjoyed the run but unfotunately we did not have enough entries to cover our considerable expenses so we made a large loss on the event. Thanks must also go to the local householders in Woodlands Road and Skeete for being so cooperative when the runners passed by. THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH.

The Lyminge Fun Run Success
 by Jean Howard

79 Runners took part in the Lyminge Multi-Terrain Fun Run on Saturday 11th March. They set off in cold, wet conditions with scattered snow showers to run 7 miles along country lanes and through Lyminge forest. A few runners went astray when a direction arrow was turned round but they were soon put back on track. The first man home was Derek Matcham with a time of 46.47 minutes and the first lady was Samantha Mills whose time was 46.52 minutes. In spite of the weather and a few hiccups most of the runners commented that the run was ‘great fun.’
Our thanks must go to Haxtons who sponsored the numbers for the runners, also Red Dragon of Lyminge who part sponsored the posters/application and The Trophy Shop in Dover who part sponsored the medals. We also had a surprise donation on the day from Podplus Ltd which was much appreciated. We are most grateful to all of them. We must also thank the Folkestone Running Club as without the help of Grahame and Tina Eke, this run would never had taken place.

APPROVED!!
Lyminge Youth Action Leisure Facility
by Glenn Floyd

Planning Permission has been granted for a dedicated sports and leisure facility for the youth of Lyminge, Etchinghill and Rhodes Minnis.
Tennis Court – Five a side Football – Skateboard/BMX – Junior Adventure Playground – Cycle & Fitness Track – Seating and Picnic Areas – Tree and Hedge Planting.
Many thanks to all our supporters of this exciting project for the area and also to the young people who have worked towards the success of our application.
We have raised an impressive £35,000 so far but we will need to raise a substantial amount to see the project through to completion. Fundraising applications are being submitted but it is important that the community as a whole supports this project both in volunteer assistance and by participating in the raising of funds.
We would welcome your support in any way that you are able to provide, including volunteering to help at fund raising events, sponsoring events/equipment etc or just donating what you can.
In addition Lyminge Youth Action also intend to provide a full programme of events during the school holidays. This is hoped to commence during the summer break this year.
This project will provide a safe facility for all ages of the community but more importantly provide a focus for young people to exercise, have fun and just hang out. Thank you once again to all those involved in the successful application – your contribution no matter how small is very important.
If you would like to find out how you could contribute to this exciting project please contact me on 862732 or leave your details at the Lyminge Library and a member of LYA will contact you.

Thank you to everyone for your kind expressions of sympathy and support. Jonathan, James and I really appreciate it. Gill Broadley

Annual Sponsored Walk
Make a note in your diary of our sponsored walk in aid of local primary schools, starting from the King’s Arms Elham at 10 a.m. Sunday 9 April.
We have invited all local primary schools to be involved and Elham and Lyminge are already on board. You may nominate a specific school or your sponsorship will be apportioned over the schools taking part.
So do come along and enjoy a tramp though the delightful countyside around Elham. The route will be mainly on footpaths and small roads. It will only be about 8 miles, but if this is too much for some of you, a shortened route can be chosen. There will be a prize for the individual or dog with the most sponsorship.
For more details or a sponsorship form, please contact any EVL member or call Ken Staff on 01303 238041.

Answers Please
The morning of Weds 01/03/06 all three houses at the end of North Lyminge (where the dirt track starts) had major problems with their alarms and immobilisers. My husband and I have Rovers and were unable to implement the manufactures reset instructions. We had to pay for both cars to be towed to a garage where we were told there was nothing electrically at fault with either of them. It was suggested the MOD may have been using equipment that has interfered with our systems, however they have assured me this is not the case. The MOD has suggested a new radio / mobile phone mast or an amateur radio user may be operating on the same frequency as our systems. Both cars were towed back and left in Lyminge car park where mine still operated fully. My husband put his in the garage at the rear of our house and again his car has immobilised itself and can no longer be driven. On a lesser note our radio doorbell has also been affected.
Could you rack your brains to see if you can help us? Have you recently installed new electrical equipment which may use radio signals or microwaves, or perhaps you are an amateur radio user and maybe inadvertently jamming our signal? If you can think of anything that may help please phone Claire or Chris on 01303 862541.

RE CHANGE OF USE OF AGRICULTURAL GROUND AT SIBTON PARK CRICKET CLUB
We have received a letter from Shepway Planning and Building Control Regarding "Change of use of Agricultural Land to provide a cricket training area as an extension to the existing cricket ground together with grading of ground levels." Please look at the application at www.ukplanning/shepway. The boundary of the proposed training ground abuts the edge of the public walkway and it is potentially a health and safety hazard if cricket balls are to be thrown or hit so close to the walkers. We are concerned about the lack of consultation and the limited time available for villagers to comment. The closing date is 31st March but we are hoping that the council may extend the consultation period if enough people write/phone/email. A great many people use the footpath so have your say! Julie & Brian Wise

Local runner’s marathon effort for Asthma UK

James Jarvis will be facing the challenge of a lifetime when he takes part in this year's Flora London Marathon on 23 April as part of the 400 strong Asthma UK team.
The 31 year old from Lyminge will be helping to raise a massive £437,500 for Asthma UK to help improve the health and well-being of the 5.2 million people with asthma in the UK.
James says, “This is my first attempt at running a marathon and it is a massive challenge. I am delighted to have this opportunity and to be able to raise money for Asthma UK. Asthma is a very common disease and is hereditary. My mother has suffered with chronic Asthma since she was a child and her life has been severely affected by the disease. I have Asthma and our son Jude was recently diagnosed as asthmatic too. The work of charities like Asthma UK fund vital research and provide essential advice to sufferers of this potential fatal disease”.
1 in 12 people in the UK have asthma so if you don’t have asthma, you might know someone who has. The money raised from the London Marathon will fund further research to help understand more about the causes of asthma and to help free people with asthma from its effects.
If you would like to sponsor James or make a donation, please visit his web site www.justgiving.com/jamesjarvis or call him on 07838147875 or contact the Asthma UK London Marathon Hotline on 020 7786 5000.

Asthma UK:

  1. Asthma UK is the charity dedicated to improving the health and well-being of the 5.2 million people in the UK whose lives are affected by asthma.

  2. For independent and confidential advice on asthma, call the Asthma UK Adviceline, which is staffed by asthma nurse specialists. It is open weekdays from 9am to 5pm on 08457 01 02 03. Or email an asthma nurse at asthma.org.uk/adviceline.

  3. For up-to-date news on asthma, information and publications, visit the Asthma UK website asthma.org.uk.

Advice from Christopher Tasker

In this last week three cars have been broken into whilst they have been parked in beauty spots or dog walking areas. These are situated in West Hythe, by the canal. Elham Park Wood near Wheelbarrow Town and at the end of the old railway track at Peene. The contents of a vehicle stolen earlier this week was found at the sight of the break-in at West Hythe. If you should be out walking this weekend and travel to that spot by car please make sure that the vehicle is left in a secure state with no contents in it. On all occasions the side window was smashed and loose change was stolen.
Whilst sending a general message I would like to draw to your attention that the less caring in the community seem to be jumping on the news about water meters in the area. An elderly lady was visited in Lyminge this week and was told by the two males that they wanted to talk about the new water meters and asked how she wanted to pay and even took credit card details.
Please make sure that all your neighbours are aware of this latest scam and of course the message is as usual DO NOT let anyone into your house and do not give them any banking details. If you should get such callers please let the Police know immediately on 01303 250055.

RHODES MINNIS EVENING CIRCLE
At our March meeting Peter Meiklejon entertained us with slides with the history of the Inn Signs of Kent, did you know that in the early days of inn keeping it was hard to make a living running a pub (nothing changed there then) so the wife run the inn during the day and the husband went out to work. The inn was named appropriately to his trade, if his trade was brick laying, hence the Bricklayers Arms. I had often wondered where these names came from. We did learn of much more interesting facts but too many to go into here. The competition – a picture of an inn won by Molly Walker.
We are doing something completely different for our April meeting, we shall be jewellery making! Not the diamond tiara this time but could be the next time. To cover the costs of materials it will be £1.50 to members and £3.00 to non-members.
If you are feeling creative you will be made very welcome, please be at Rhodes Minnis Village Hall ready to start for 7.30pm 19th April 2006.
The item of jewellery made at this meeting will then be judged for the April Competition, (sorry this is open to members only)
Please ring Eileen Sless on 01303 863081 for further details

Mrs Reed was our speaker today and her subject was ‘Lighthouse Ahoy’. It was extremely interesting to learn how lighthouses were built in the days of limited methods, lack of specialist equipment and the difficulty of accessing the rocks on which they were to be built. Mrs Reed also brought to attention how many sailors died and ships lost prior to the advent of the lighthouse.
The competition was won by Dottie Cross.
We warmly welcome visitors to our very friendly meetings which are held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 2.30pm in Etchinghill Village Hall. Our next meeting is on 18th April when our speaker will be Mr G Allen whose subject is ‘Upstairs, Downstairs - New Bond Street
